Not rubbish and not ironic, simply a mass generalisation. Many people are on better money here and find they move up the ladder quicker. In truth, many many more don't.

Australian property market is way overpriced. Look at what you can buy for about $270K AUD in Knoxville, Tennessee, USA, on a 1/4 acre block. Knoxville is not woop woop, either. It's defo not shabby.

Yes American prices are still expected to fall further i heard.....cannot be too much more surely? And yes do agree here is overpriced but the punters keep paying these prices. Does the Australian great love affair with Real Estate know no bounds?

As for stereo-typing, we all do it, while it is a little unfair to generalise it is the best way of getting across a point about who will get on in Australia and who won't.

Australia will appeal to a certain type of person more than others. Why do you think so many people with a non-university education thrive in Australia?

The media in Australia is dominated by tabloid gutter press, cultural experiences revolve around getting drunk at barbies and going out for dinner usually means a trip to Hungry Jacks! Like I said, many Brits will thrive in this environment.

I make a bet that the majority that come home are those who are a little more cultured and miss the UK and Europe and the cultural diversity they offer.
You reminded me why I would never go back to the UK. Stereotyping, judgemental, narrow minded up your own a*** type of people like you.
How the hell would you know who will and who won't get on in Australia.

By the way, I am University educated AND thrive here in Australia (your words not mine). And by the way I'm not British either, but from "cultural" Europe as you put it.

Yes, but you have to live with Americans. I think this is reflected in the price.

Also remember that the American economy is about as sprightly as a one-legged tortoise with leukaemia right now, and real estate prices are at an all time low. People are desperate to sell and escape their mountain of debt.

London is the only city in the UK that can match Melbourne or Sydney for diversity of restaurants. And Melbourne (in fact any Australian capital) trashes London when it comes to cafe culture & coffee - London is full of plastic, generic U.S style 'coffeshops' - there are now (pathetically) more Starbucks there than in Manhattan! And Melbourne has superior wine bars & a more sophisticated late night bar scene than anywhere in the UK.
As far as some of the 'experts' on here who consider Australia to be devoid of culture, explain why Manchester (England's 'second' city) doesn't even have so much as an independent bookshop in it's city centre - like just about everywhere else in the UK bland chain stores dominate.
Other examples - Melbourne has more 'arthouse' cinema screens than Liverpool, Leeds & Manchester put together. Melbourne has a larger visual arts scene & more gallery spaces than any UK city outside London. Melbourne has a larger live music scene than any UK city outside London.
Unless you're from central London you have no reason to feel smug or superior about the apparent cultural richness of the UK.
And troubador, you live in Perth, what did you expect?

Good reply bogan
Im not sure where the overpriced housing tag comes from either.
Ive just bough a 3 by 1 10 minutes walk to the ocean and 15 minutes drive into perth, i bought for $350000 so tell me where could you buy in the UK that close to a large city and 10 minutes to the most beautiful beaches in the world,
I lived in spain for 2 years and we were living in a 2 bed villa 10 minutes drive to beach and they were selling for the same amount of money as what I have paid for a much bigger property on a bigger block of land here.

I know where I would rather be, but each to their own

That is an aspect that is often overlooked.

Maybe some people look at other properties, eg: to compare against that one in the USA.

$244,000
1 Acre, town water, 3 mins to shops & school, 4 beds, 2 baths, 4 car spaces

But if you want to be near beaches, and/or the City, you need to pay more.

For those packing up to come 'home' to the uk. Just remember unemployment is going through the roof here. The company I worked for (logistics) didn't give a pay rise for anyone in the past couple of years and has indicated it may be some time before it does again. At the same time it has reduced it's pension contribution and other benefits such as car allowance, and health cover.

Cost of living is still increasing, council tax, water rates, gas and electricity is at an all time high. Due to the low value of sterling, anything that is imported from the continent (isn't that everything now???) is way higher than a year ago (simple food stuff like pasta has almost trebled in price).

If you are coming (or going) just make sure it's for the right reasons. Family ties are the biggest issue here, but remember 'happy families' aren't always what they seem.

This thread has gone on WAY to long. All the Aussie wannabies and residents try their best to say how great it is, then the other members go against that.

Everyone has an opinion, I DO think it is oversold but, most of this thread is arguments.
