I do not know what part of Australia you are from because I am on the Gold Coast and find you would be hard pushed to find anywhere in this country that is more laid back and casual than here. You have to wear a suit no question I have 2 companies and I would never employ anybody who did not wear a suit for an interview. It shows respect for the employer. I agree that in most peoples day to day jobs they do not wear a suit but you have to for an interview. And as for the better way, not everything the Aussies do is better and the better way is not always a scruffy way.

We do things differently in Perth. Here they couldn't give a shit. WA has the strongest economy in Australia & is carrying the rest of the country at the moment, so they must be doing something right.

Have you got the economic facts to back that up?. Would love you to post them on here because that is somewhat doubtful as there is only really one major city in WA and you are saying that this one city out performs Sydney,Melbourne,Brisbane and the rest of the country?.

Just think how better it would be if you had better weather and was not as isolated as it is.

I said WA not only Perth. I'm sure you've heard of the resources boom, iron ore, gold price, demand from China, oil price etc. All the info is out there. WA has the strongest economy in Australia. housiing market is strong, people are flooding in, Job market is white hot, salaries are climbing. East coast economies are slowing, housing market flat etc. This is the place to be.

I'm glad we're 'isolated' from the east coast. I'm not interested in the rest of Australia, it could be another country as far as I'm concerned. I wouldn't live in redneck 'deliverance' land (SE Qld) if you paid me (well I would if it was a lot).

Now I get where you are coming from and I do apologise!. You are correct if you were working down a mine or capping off oil wells etc you would not wear a suit for a job interview. I was rather talking about the rest of the civilized areas in Australia. And I did not realise that China only dealt with W.A . We must try to get the Chinese to trade with the rest of us.

Also, you may be un aware that Perth is certainly not the place to be with regards immigration location choices to Australia. But hey. now we know we can pan for gold and dig for some oil, heck.... I am packing my bags now. And I can leave that suit and civilisation for good. ye ha.

Obviously,to quote you, you are living in a different country if not a different world!
Perhaps you should work for the W.A Government and try to divert the majority of people that emigrate or move interstate to Queensland, as this is officially the fastest growing state in Australia,to go to a state where they can work in a zinc mine or dig some gold bars from a stream. :

As a footnote, why the animosity to anywhere else in Australia but Perth?. Just wondering as this thread originally started about attire for a job interview. Shall we have a bit of fun and do a short poll about suits or no suits and then we can close this little debate. Lets start it now and we will take 10 postings and look at the results. The question is this. If you were going for a job interview that was important to you and you really wanted it would you wear a suit and be smart just to be on the safe side or not?............................Sorry no miners,Oil workers or Chinese may apply

Vote 1. Suit

Actually, you can get away with not wearing a suit as you can claim to come from a company that has a dress down code. I just wear reasonably smart chinos, and an ironed shirt without a tie. I would wear a suit, all things being equal.

These threads do have a tendancy to meander.

Queensland was the fastest growing state, the baton has now been passed to WA. Mandurah is the fastest growing region in Australia at the moment.

Sorry for digressing from the matter in hand.

Vote 2. Whatever you like. I really couldn't give a shit. For the interview for the job I'm in now (a job that I liked the look of) I wore a polo shirt (not tucked in), chinos & trainers. In my field no one gives a toss & I'm a professional & office based. For every interview I've been for I've dressed as scruffily as possible & always got the job. Fortunately people in this industry hire you purely on ability & not on appearances.

It does depend on the field but personally I would always wear a suit as you have got all bases covered as you would hope that they would want to employ you on your personality and skill sets but being smart also enables you to show respect for your future employer. Lets agree to disagree and have an on line drink to it.

What is Coopers sparkling, I know Coopers beer but what is the sparkling bit?
Is it just a Coopers brand that I have not come across yet or some exotic cocktail thingy. Hey, you have got a good job it's 3.30 and you are already on the turps

I wish! It's Coopers Sparkling Ale, made by Coopers in South Australia. It's my favourite draft beer. It's quite strong for an Aussie beer as well.

I will have to give that a go next time I go to the grog shop. I usually go for James Boags or Crown but have been off all booze since Jan 1st, just for a bit of a de tox so am gagging for a beer any beer.

HMM - not the first time you've made your views of the East Coast known in such a manner. Must be hard knowing you've confined yourself to Perth for good

To return to teh original thread - I've interviewed many people, and, if all else were equal but one came in a suit and the other didn't I would hire the one in the suit regardless of what position it was for. If it was close, and the 'non-suit was slightly ahead, I'd give the suit the chance as it shows he/she is prepared to make the effort for the interview and that effort could transfer into the workplace. 'Touch wood' I haven't been wrong yet. And, while we're on the subject - I was offered a job today and I was wearing a suit.
