Re: Anti 4x4 sentiment
At the time - no - I was a lot better off during that period of my life and I didn't honestly care what the servicing interval was. These days, a family man, I find myself reading all the small print. Best 'proper' 4WD I ever owned (in my own personal view) was an Isuzu Citation. Used in 'anger' on many occasions, had a little Corolla for the school run.

I reckon it's not bad. I had a look at one at the 4wd show. Looks good. I didn't like the interior that much and there were some definite quality issues in there. It looks like it's got a good engine and transmission though and the price is good.

Best bang for buck atm is the Subaru outback luxury $38000 on the road. Even though it doesn't look like it, it has 200mm of ground clearance ( the same as my X Trail.)

Don't forget that the Lada Cossack was once voted the 4x4 of the year!!
In other words don't believe all you read in the magazines etc.
Without sounding like a bighead, I have forgotten more about cars than most of these blokes in the magazines have ever known.
Thats why I can't watch 5th gear etc, when you have the likes of Mr Clarkson spouting a load of old S***
IMO drive what suits you and your lifestyle and don't worry about what other people think.

The 'old' problem with Landies wasn't so much that they went wrong - in the 'good old days' everything went wrong to some degree, it was the time to get parts which was the problem. Not too bad in the very early days of points/plugs etc, but once they started to go 'electronic' it became more of a problem. Personally I love them - had an old '79 Air Portable (the ubiquitous 'Lightweight') in the UK and it was indestructible. I would have loved a Series 3 Disco here but even with my 'associated company' discount it was still over $25k more than the Pathfinder. Maybe next time.
