Thanks for all your informative replies.
There are 14 of us coming to Cairns from UK end of July August 2010, I'm getting married there
Even though I live in Spain, it's cheaper to fly back to UK and go from there with the rest of the family.
So we are tied to the dates; due to work commitments etc.
We are hoping to book the flights as soon as Xmas is done and dusted, I just hope they dont leap any higher in price.

We've only flown with Virgin and Etihad but I'd highly recommend Virgin. The whole flight was relaxing and easy, food and staff were nice, short stopover in Hong Kong (not the best airport in my experience but not the worst and it's only 2 hours).
Wouldn't fly Etihad again, staff were rude, plane was freezing and flying through the UAE was stressful. plus the way the flight is broken up (7 hours then 14) made it seem even longer than it is. 14 hours in one go is a killer!
My bro lives in Oz and generally says you can't go wrong with any of the Asian airlines, they really seem to know how to deliver customer service. But if you want a British/European airline then it would be Virgin for me.

Which airlines do the forumers recommend when flying to Auz from UK?
When do you think its the best time to buy the ticket? well in advance, or nearer to date required?
The average price for a ticket next summer (Man. to Cairns) is 1,200GBP
I assumed they would be cheaper, any suggestions?
Many thanks

I'd have to go with Qantas but only if I can get BA on the longhaul leg!
I'd never fly virgin or emirates again.
Cathay and Malaysian were pretty good but not as good as BA although Malaysian did give us a business class upgrade.

The new singapore airlines economy class is streets ahead of qantas
Much better seat pitch (gap between seats) , in-seat power socket to charge laptop, hundreds of on-demand movies etc, on a great big screen, the seat reclines+scoots out under you so the person in front isnt so much in your face even on full recline. Good food (and they give you ice creams which are fabulous on a long flight :-) )

We fly out tonight with Singapore who knock spots off everyone else (in my opinion). last year we travelled with Virgin via Hong Kong. The flight was pretty good but still nowhere near SIA. If you fly with Virgin you will still get your Singapore Airlines air miles if you are a Krisflyer member.
