I have a large reclaimed pine welsh dresser and a 6ft reclaimed pine farmhouse dining table and six chairs - is it worth bringing those? i was hoping to go modern but I have been advised i will get more money selling them in oz... but they are big and bulky so will take up loads of space in container so unsure!

Hi there,
A useful question which (as someone has pointed out, has a thread somewhere on the site). For my own use I spent a bit of time compiling info from the threads (and gave up as too much info) but here is what I have so far.
1. good quality underwear
2. socks
3. towels
4. electric heaters
5. computers
6. mobile handset
7. chocolate
8. 2 in 1 shampoo
9. suits
10. comfortable shoes
11. good vacuum cleaner/hoover
12. good duvets
13. men’s plain cotton shirts
14. men’s suits
15. Heinz tomato soup
16. Ibuprofen/paracetamol
17. coat hangers ?
18. clothes tumble dryer
19. books
20. kettle
21. iron
22. hot water bottles
23. scarves and gloves
24. Ultra sanitary towels
25. Kids t shirts – good quality
26. beside tables
27. lamps
28. food processor
29. china and kitchen equipment
30.
Would anyone like to continue this?
Having done this I think I should point out that people are very different and having moved alot over different continents it depends on how attached you are to your whirlmajigs etc and whether you are ready to adapt to what is available in your host country. Me thinks "when in Rome do as the Romans do" and make do with whatever the country has to offer. Australia is a developed country so I doubt if it will be too hard to get most things a Brit would want.
Ciao

We got our stuff today and its nice to be surrounded by my things and all my kitchen gadgetry. My little boy thinks christmas has come early! Our rental doesn't feel empty anymore. Ahh I'm at peace and all is happy with the world!

Cheers for the replies folks.
We lived in Melbourne a few years ago so have a pretty good idea of what you can and can't get (the same as) in auz but just wanted to sanity check the items that we planned to bring with.
The extension leads suggestion is a good one.
Hangers....

If you like tea I would bring a load of your favourite brand; you might be able to get it here in one of the specialist British shops, depending on the brand, but whenever I have checked they have always been near to their sell by date.
If you are a hi-fi fan I have heard you will likely find that good quality speakers are better value in the UK and there is easier access to a wide range.
Some have said you can't get as good a range of power tools here so if you are a tradie or are fussy, you might want to bring over (Festool). Don't know whether the tradies here use 110v tools with those yellow transformers like the UK tradies do.
I think you can get better deals on cheap inkjet printer cartridges in the UK so if you plan on printing alot of photos you might want to bring a big supply. That being said original cartridges here are less of a rip off than in the UK.
Steam generator irons are alot more expensive here than in the UK (more than double).

A friend already in aus asked me to bring her one over but when we looked at the cost in uk V au there wasnt much difference!! A DCO7 is about £200, not seen many good offers here to change my mind yet
Did anyone take there home phone with them - I've got two ntl cordless ones and wasnt sure if they'd work or not
For the ladies - are libra really as good as always or do i need to bring a case of them over

well some comments from me.....
1.Australia is well known for inventing the hills hoist washing line (whirlygig thing!!!)
2. why? why come and live on the other side of the world and bring a load of stuff from UK...why bother coming..just stay there where you can get all of that "stuff" what's the point of having a stock pile...what ya gonna do when it's all gone.....just buy an aussie flag and a plant a gum tree in the garden and stay put... sit and watch neighbours and pretend you live here
3. i thought the point of living in another country is to live somewhere else.....different........
4. lamenting things from the past doesn't really help...
