Doing as requested - introducing myself before posting.
Born and grew up in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), "took the gap" to South Africa during the latter part of the bush war; moved to Australia in mid-'80s. Spent most of the last decade teaching in China. Now back in Oz. Still a British citizen! Wish I'd found this forum while in China. Am here now because I'm interested in discussion re the Oscar Pistorius tragedy. |

Hi. Since this was in the Africa section I assume it applies to all Africa and not just SA?
I'm a 40 year old Scottish mum living in Luanda (Angola) with my husband and 2 kids. He's in the oil and gas industry and I'm a 'retired' graphic designer. We have previously been in Bergen Norway and more recently in Tripoli, Libya until we were evacuated in Feb 2011 at the start of the Gadaffi war! Never a dull moment in our family :) |

Re: Introduce yourself before posting
Hi,
Im Simon. I am from a tiny village in Northumberland called Cresswell. I moved to London last year to pursue acting as a viable passion. I met "J". I want to move to SA with her and at the same time pull my weight and be valuable to the country, so Im looking for advice because it seems quite daunting from where Im sitting. |
Re: Introduce yourself before posting
Hi Simon
I'm about to take up a teaching post in Nigeria - a pretty dangerous part of Africa from what I've read. I'll be living in a compound on Victoria Island, the wealthy, heavily protected commercial hub next to Lagos, and have advised to have not only a driver but also a police escort if I travel into Lagos after dark. Why Africa? - seems a good way to experience the land/culture/people/coastline (South Africa being a definite 'draw') but Kidnappings and armed robberries are prevalent so - would be wise to check out the location VERY carefully, and make sure you have enough cash to offer the odd bribe here and there bcos I've heard the place (incl the police force) is also pretty corrupt. |

Re: Introduce yourself before posting
Hi everyone! I have just moved from the UK to Cape Town as my husband is from SA and was getting homesick! I was happy to leave the UK weather for the weather here! I am now sorting out my temporary residence permit and looking around for work ideally near Big Bay.
Nice to meet you! :D |

Re: Introduce yourself before posting
I emigrated to SA a while ago, After a bit of a struggle I managed to make a decent living. Married a SA girl.
Although we were OK, I did not think there was much of a future for my kids. So we packed up and started again in England, and are now settled in. It’s a pity, as SA could be the best country in the world, best climate and scenery, and many decent people. But its all gone wrong. |
