Not true at all. I found Northerner's to be very polite and helpful. Perhaps it is because they live in a climate where if you don't know your neighbor or help out a stranger in the winter, they might die. They tend to be standoffish at first but that is a matter of keeping their private lives private.
I've not found southerner's very friendly but rather insulated and the new generation downright rude.

Allright y'all. I am what you consider a Northerner with VERY Southern roots as both my parents are from there so I've been raised with Southern notions.
Okra that isn't fried is icky. When used properly it makes for a great gumbo. However you can give me fried okra any day. I absolutely love the stuff, especially from Lambert's in Missouri. They are home of the thrown roll. If any of you make it this way by car let me know an I'll show you were to get some fantastic Southern grub. ABY can testify to it greatness I'm sure.
That Tracy is how women are with women. Haven't you notice how we all, no matter what part of the country we come from, hate each other. We'll be nice one day and talk about you behind your back the next. This isn't a Southern versus Northern thing. It's just a woman thing. Which really sucks.
Southerners are quite vocal on their opinions just as well. I have aunts and uncles that will leave you rolling just hearing them talk about folk. We don't like to beat around the bush either.
Missouri is not a Southern state. However it can be considered a slave state. I would fully qualify Missouri as part of the Midwest.
Oklahoma can be considered a Southern state along with Texas. However there is a fuzzy line between Texas and New Mexico for Southwestern status. Arizona, New Mexico and the western portion of Texas are considered the Southwest. When you consider the US geography you have to think in sextants and not a single divide. We have more regions that England I believe. Here we have the New England, Mid-Atlantic, South, Midwest, Southwest, Plains, West, and Pacific Northwest within CONUS (CONtiguous United States, or lower 48). Within these you have further divides. Within these regions there is culture and accents definitive of each. In a sense it makes each of these parts seem like a different country. So if there are those that can't deal with the South then it's the not US that you have an issue with. It's the South. The same could be said for the Midwest and so on.

I wonder if I'm a Northerner born on the wrong side of the Mason-dixon? I talk fairly fast, I actually pronounce my "g's" (i.e. nothing instead of nuthin'), I believe in telling it like it is, if I don't like someone, they know it, and sure as heck don't take no crap off the OH. If I disagree, I let him know and we have it out. Oh, and I'm not a religious nutter. How the heck did I wind up here? Hell, that's probably why I'm finding it difficult making new friends (and I'm the native USC) in the new town we're in. I suppose I'm just a fish out of water in KY.

Agreed, it's a BIG country with alot of different elements.
There are two things I've never understood though-the accent in New Orleans and the one in Rhode Island. Neither here nor there but a mystery to me.
Oh and believe it or not Collard Green with Balsamic vinegar is okay. Who knew?!

BTW, are you saying there is a lack of accent in those two places?

I love collard greens too given that they are prepared correctly. I know in my family we like to use a mixture of greens so that the bitterness in one is offset by the smooth flavor in the other. Its one of those things that's cooked nice and long with a nice ham hock, the right amount of salt and pepper, with potatoes added in the end. I also like cabbage too. Call me a southern girl I guess with northern attitudes.

As you know I'm a damnyankee here in GA-had always avoided collard greens UNTIL I had them at this restaurant in Savannah that is sadly defunct now. It only had 12 tables and the meal was 7 courses, chef's choice-you didn't know what you were going to get until it was brought out. Anyway, they were pretty good and not bitter at all. BUT when I cashiered at Kroger a few years ago, I HATED it when folks bought them, because they were always all wet and big and made a mess on the belt.
No, not saying there is a lack of accent AT ALL-just strange accents-very different.

You know it's true, especially in an office environment. I don't know how many instances where I've heard of trust issues. I'm sure every woman has at least been involved in a platonic relationship with another woman and told her something that needed to be kept hush-hush, then to find out the next day it's spread like wildfire. I'm sure you've also been witness to such betrayal as well. One moment you'll hear a woman tell you how cute your purse is just to make you smile and the next you'll hear her by the water cooler about how much of a nitwit you are. It's sad but it's true. I think that's why women like having a gay guy as a friend because we know the betrayal factor isn't there. It's also why I think we're more comfortable in a room of guys, sexist remarks withstanding of course. At least we know where they're coming from. Despite that I do have great girlfriends whom I trust. Just enough to count on one hand.
