Dread you asked a question, I tried to give you a correct reply and you apparently accuse me of prejudice when I clearly stated I had no bad feelings about missionaries.
In fact one of my closest friends was a Catholic missionary nun in Africa. She left the convent to pursue a career.
My further reply received an insult. May I politely ask why?
Just looked up St Francis Xavier as I know very little about himself as an individual. According to the wikipedia article (If it is correct) he apparently founded the Inquisition which seemed to do quite a lot of general persecuting.

The inquisition was a savage repressive process within the Catholic church and was not limited to Goa or even Portugal.
Francis Xavier was head of the Jesuit order in Goa at the time of the inquisition. As such he would have been responsible for implementing it but he did not "found" it.

Thank you for sharing the Wikipedia link on this topic. Yes you are correct. It started in 12th century France. Having checked this link today I am sure it is factually correct. I have often thought that it must have been a real atrocity here in Goa but only when reading this did I see the detail that made it meaningful. No wonder people don't talk about it but it must remain in the communal consciousness nevertheless.
What I had forgotten was that it initially started out as anti jewish but then automatically involved the Hindu population here in Goa too.

A few years ago, I started reading a book set in Old Goa (when it was still the capital) around the start of the inquisition. It involved a Jewish family living there.
For some reason I didn't get to finish it.
Anyone know what it was?

Overseas UK pensions 'blocked for spouses'
6 May: BBC. People living abroad will no longer be entitled to a British state pension based solely on their spouse's work history, under government plans… Some 220,000 overseas residents receive this payment at a cost of £410m a year… While increasingly rare in Britain, the practice has become a popular option for people who live overseas and who are married to British citizens.,, But British pensioners and their families who currently live overseas and make such claims would not be affected…

Years later my wife caught a train, began to read it and became aware of a Jewish woman across staring at her. Turned out that both were reading from the same book. They became friends and so has the author ...

More like the book has gotta stuck to me ... I got to hear of it while it was being written so I contacted the author and we exchanged messages. I was rewarded with a proof copy of the book, prior to publication.
