Re: Volunteering as a job getting tactic - worth it?

In my experience, volunteering is no guarantee of a job. Volunteer because you want to and not because you think it will lead to a job. I volunteered for well over a year at a local organisation. ...

Re: Four years in - and want out!

Thanks, everyone.

It's always good to get someone else's perspective. I should add, even though I'd love to leave the US right now, it can't actually happen. For a kick off, OH can't travel...

Four years in - and want out!

Not been here for a wee while, hullo!

Need someone to kick me up the backside/pat me on the head and say 'there, there'.

It's a little over 4 years since we moved here and I'm just so cheesed...

Re: Any Brits in Colorado?

Fort Collins is a great town - I lived there for a year and really liked it. Now living in the Colorado Springs area.

There's actually quite a lot of Brits living in the Springs. There's also a...

Re: Difficult to make friends in America?

This has been an interesting thread. I'm nearly three years in, I like living in the US, but the making friends thing has been a disaster. I have made some good friends, but they are all British. ...

Selling UK shares

I have some shares in a UK company that I wish to sell. Having never sold shares before I'm unsure how to go about it, as the sharedealing company recommended by the listed company can't act for me...

Re: Moving to the mountains

I live in Colorado, really like it. If you don't mind a bit of a drive to the mountains then any of the Front Range towns from Colorado Springs up to Fort Collins would be viable. I'm a die-hard...

Re: Fort Collins (CO) Vs Portsmouth (NH)

I'm not going to get into the visa argument as others have covered that already. But I can comment on Fort Collins.

I lived there when I first moved over here. It's a nice town, it has a good...

Re: Halloween?

Me too. I hate Hallowe'en with the 'trick or treating' - I think it's glorified begging. Years ago kids expected to do a 'turn', sing, recite a poem, dance, or something before they got anything. ...

Re: What's on your American Bucket List?

Visit Alaska (hopefully north of the Arctic Circle)
See a polar bear in the wild
See the volcanoes on Hawaii
Visit every national park
Ski every ski area in Colorado
Go heli-skiing
Climb a 14er...

Re: XE.com - getting slow?

Weird. I've always used the ACH method at both ends, so not sure why it's taking so much longer than before. It doesn't seem to matter how large or small the transfer amount is either.

Sorry to hijack, but my dad has recently been diagnosed with diabetes (diet controlled), and is due to visit shortly.

Any tips for things to watch out for while he's here? Of course, eating out...

Re: XE.com - getting slow?

Wow, that's good! It used to average out at about 5 days or so, but the last few transfers have taken at least 10 days.

Re: how do you cure the homesick blues?

Can generally fix this by listening to the radio. Round here they play a lot of 70s and 80s British bands, so seldom a day goes by without hearing Simple Minds, Spandau Ballet or Tears for Fears. ...

Re: Equivalent of Beecham's cold and flu

Theraflu works by tasting so vile you feel a constant urge to throw up while you're forcing it down, so you don't notice how rotten your cold has been making you feel. Quite a clever tactic really.

XE.com - getting slow?

Wondering if it's just me, but the last few transfers I've made have taken significantly longer to get across the pond than before. Has anyone else noticed this?

Received our green cards the other day! Am very pleased, not least because it reduces the amount of paperwork we'll need to do for a while! Didn't have any RFEs either which is good.

Quick...

Re: Apparently I've been in the wrong state all these years!

Don't know what temperature it was today, other than too ruddy hot. Summer is seriously overrated. Bring on the sub-zeroes again. It's 51 days till my local ski resort start snow-making - not that...

Re: HOA'S and do's and don'ts

All this makes me think we're just lucky with our HOA. Mind you, of all the folk we know here in Colorado, I've only heard one HOA grumble.

Our HOA seems to have been given a helluva fright by...

My tuppence-worth, based on Scotland/Colorado

Colorado - timber with wooden siding or stucco

You still get great tenements in the cities, some with a 'wally...

Re: HOA'S and do's and don'ts

Our HOA doesn't seem too bad, and at 200 bucks a year their fees are cheap - most of it goes towards the security officers they provide. The don't allow washing lines outside, which annoys me, but...
