I believe there is some kind of DNA test you can get for dogs to find out exactly what breeds they are a mix of. I think I saw it on tv or possibly read about it, but it may be worth googling to see...

If he loves mountains so much, you might want to try parts of Wales, the north especially. Parts of N Wales, such as Llandudno, Conway & Betwys y Coed are very mountainous and close to the coast...
