Re: Soldier hacked to death in London

If I am putting the zealots in prison for a long time (as you too would do) how is that not putting responsibility where it truly lies?

I think the cost of keeping someone in prison is about 50K...

Re: Soldier hacked to death in London

Sorry, I don't know how to multiquote (although I do know where the button is).

I wouldn't execute the zealots, although I would lock them up for a long time. They are the truly delusional...

Re: Soldier hacked to death in London

Doubt that you had been hit over the head.

Anyway, my point is that some things are 100% beyond doubt. Unless you want to enter some kind of metaphysical debate about whether "doubt" exists as...

Re: Soldier hacked to death in London

So are you saying the killers were not conscious of their actions? Bit confused. Assuming they are conscious of their actions, and therefore responsible, you see a custodial sentence as adequate?

Re: Soldier hacked to death in London

Ok, so we agree that some things are beyond doubt.

Presumably you are suggesting that no human behaviour is beyond doubt. So if someone, for example, smashed you over the head with a iron bar (in...

Re: Soldier hacked to death in London

Don't disagree with your first paragraph.

I don't think it is a strawman. You are absolving them of personal responsibility are you not?

What is wrong with government's "murdering" people...

Re: Soldier hacked to death in London

What makes you thinks you can stop something by "understanding where it comes form"? From what your saying the "where it comes from" is already understood - a cult, al reaction to Western...

Re: Soldier hacked to death in London

Indeed. One of many incoherences of Islam. And even if virginity were that prized, why would a man want a dozen virgins at one time? I suppose it relates to control of women, a major theme in that...

Re: Soldier hacked to death in London

They may. They may also choose to become a suicide bomber or become hate teachers. We don't know. My point is that their crime is so horrific and indisputable that I don't care. Rapid execution...

Re: Soldier hacked to death in London

That's ridiculous, they are only allotted 12 virgins, so even if you combine their bounty, it would amount to only 24. Are you suggesting there were 4 accomplices to bring the virgin count up to 72...

Re: Soldier hacked to death in London

Explain why you cannot say that ? Why in cases which are irrefutable, which are 100% beyond doubt, which are fact, and where the nature of the crime is horrific that there cannot be summary justice....

Re: Soldier hacked to death in London

Here's what Adebolajo's lawyer said:

Mr Gottlieb said Adebolajo was "not so depraved or wicked that he is incapable of redemption", saying the murder "shares the characteristics of a religiously...

Re: Soldier hacked to death in London

They do have a right, but this wrong. It's a waste of public money and has many other negative ramifications. In extreme cases (such as this) summary justice would be a better solution. Let's send...

Re: Soldier hacked to death in London

Good, that is the main thing, though a bit odd that you won't concede it is dangerous. Salman Rushdie might disagree with you.

Bear in mind that Europeans dressing in a conservative manner are...

Re: Soldier hacked to death in London

The "theocratic revolution"...so spiritual wasn't it. The case in point was that Iran was largely moderate Islam and women were an integral part of society; now they are covered in sheets and denied...

Re: Soldier hacked to death in London

My point about Iran was that it was a thriving Middle Eastern country until about thirty years ago when the Islamic Revolution sent it backward by about 200 years. I did not comment on it having...

Re: Soldier hacked to death in London

It most definitely complex, but generally you are right. Islamists (the devout muslims) are instructed by the Koran to only respect other muslims, and to treat women of all stripes in what we would...

Re: Soldier hacked to death in London

I agree. I have been participating on this topic on both the Aussie forum and the Canadian forum, and have frankly been appalled at the level of debate in the Barbie. In terms of British "expats"...

Re: Soldier hacked to death in London

Nothing offensive here. A good comparison of the holy literature. I suppose the distinction is not quite as critical as you make it, because even if the Bible is a third person account of what the...

The danger is not with the stories but with people choosing to believe and act on the stories.

Re: Soldier hacked to death in London

This is actually not true and serious error that many atheists make. Some religions are worse than others (as noted in Beoz's post above).

They are part of British culture now. The extremists are the urgent problem, that need to be moderated somehow, but the rest are no better or worse than the many other religions that persist in...

Arrow Re: Soldier hacked to death in London

You are somewhat open-minded for a religious person. The guy you refer to in discussion with Tony Blair is Christopher Hitchens (recently dead). I encourage you to listen to more of his speeches...
