Re: When did your relationship with UK friends and family start to fade

Ahh, yes I totally understand that scenario. I am planning a trip back at the moment and trying to work out how to fit in 5 places in Kent from Tonbridge to Broadstairs as well as Essex,...

Re: When did your relationship with UK friends and family start to fade

But what if the tables were turned, what if she had left for Canada and you had stayed in UK, would you have made the effort to go to see her? Also, would she make the effort to come back to UK to...

Re: When did your relationship with UK friends and family start to fade

It's not just people not understanding size of the place here in USA. Although that does happen often, I can't count how many times I've been asked about popping over to New York City. When I tell...

Re: When did your relationship with UK friends and family start to fade

I thought I would post this here as it is more to do with relationships than the eclipse, but I have already had friends who have shown no interest in coming to Rochester to see me suggesting they...

Re: When did your relationship with UK friends and family start to fade

Ahh yes, that is true. I have family in places I would normally never visit for a holiday - Croydon comes to mind! But I would always visit them when I can, and if they moved to an equally...

Re: When did your relationship with UK friends and family start to fade

Yes, I still love Norfolk- just so many other different places I want to visit, in the UK as well as abroad. Clearly I'm opposite to Hawkmoon.[/QUOTE]
We drove through Norfolk last year on the way...

Re: When did your relationship with UK friends and family start to fade

I don't think it matters where you live, it either happens or it doesn't. There were people who hardly ever made the effort to travel to my house in England, yet were happy to see me if I made the...

Re: When did your relationship with UK friends and family start to fade

I am sorry to hear your life has changed so much, and not in the way you would like. But hopefully, come next year and your cousin's visit, you will be back in employment and more settled - I wish...

Re: When did your relationship with UK friends and family start to fade

I remember when I was little an Aunt and Uncle and their kids emigrated to Australia and my parents discussed the fact they would never see them again. I think my Mum sent birthday and Christmas...

Re: When did your relationship with UK friends and family start to fade

I keep in contact with family that I care about and who care about me, but I know most won't come visit for all the reasons already talked about. But that doesn't mean I don't get calls from them...

Re: When did your relationship with UK friends and family start to fade

Not so quiet, although the village we live in is quiet. But we are moving back to Rochester, which has museums, theatre and art galleries - just not quite the same as London, I was spoilt there! -...

Re: When did your relationship with UK friends and family start to fade

So that does sound like the thing to do, try to keep the bond going from afar and keep sending the photos of things to do and things you are doing that they may like. Hopefully then the nephews will...

Re: When did your relationship with UK friends and family start to fade

I think if we lived somewhere nearer an international airport hub, like if we lived in New York, friends would be more likely to visit. But then again, maybe they still wouldn't visit.

I also...

Re: When did your relationship with UK friends and family start to fade

Or another idea is the sister and family go to Disney and then the nephews fly to Canada instead of home. With those long summer holidays to fill, I am sure the boys would like the extra weeks...

Re: When did your relationship with UK friends and family start to fade

I do understand going to Disney for kids if that is all you want to do and you had no family in more interesting places to visit. But if my brother had been in Ontario, with a boat, with all the...

Re: When did your relationship with UK friends and family start to fade

That's like saying I can only come visit you in London if I can make it coincide with a trip to Alton Towers!!

Re: When did your relationship with UK friends and family start to fade

In MHO, I think that is the right attitude. I am trying to do the same, make friends here where I live, leave the door open for friends and family back in UK, but not get upset by any lack of effort...

Re: When did your relationship with UK friends and family start to fade

I think that would be a great thing to do, and the parents might relish the opportunity of having a week or so without the kids. And they aren't just magical things for a lad - I miss having a boat...
