Re: Racism in OZ
Again, that implies that Australia is a racist country, when it is no more or less racist than any other place. Racism is in every society at all levels, and is only reduced by education. It gets worse when economies go down the pan as those at the top seek to redirect blame from them and pit the races against one another. Done since Roman times and probably earlier. It has nothing to do with any particular nation and I for one am tired of the lazy, hackneyed and defamatory attitude that Australia is "a racist country". People want to go to some eastern European countries if they want to see real racists, or the Deep South of the US, for example. Both these locations have problems with racism that make anything you find in Aus look pretty tame.
So the world hasn't kept up with Australia becoming a more diverse society. Surely no big deal. Anyhow this question is asked often on American forums ..a lot of the world know little of Australia.
Really difficult to believe folk take the question so seriously. I know of the racism in Eastern Europe very well but probably most the world is oblivious to it.....but then the question concerned Australia and a black fellow has suggested there are some issues in his experience...although not to grave...

The vast majority of the Indians who were attacked were by Maoris and Sudanese. God where the foreign students live there are NO Australians!
For **** sake do you know where these foreigners live? They live in areas with other foreigners!
Australians are a MINORITY in Sydney and Melbourne. They are actually virtually extinct! Walk around inner Sydney and Melbourne and it will be spot the Aussie - harder to find than Wally.
I have been attacked 3 times in Australia - once by Aborigines, one by Polynesians probably Maoris and once by Lebs/Arabs.
Can I have all 3 of those groups demonised please?

Mr Grumpy......how do you distinguish Foreigners from Australians? How do you know that the groups you mentioned were of "Lebs/Arab" or Maori ethicity but Australian Citizens. The very way you phrase your statement suggests that you think Australians are white. All you are doing is emphasising the point you are trying to denounce. Keep it up.....its making our job easier!
You are a fool if you think they do mean that. Also these groups notoriously do not consider themselves Australian. God there are 5th generation Australian born Greeks who still say their first loyalty is to Greece.
Oh and also the fact that over 25% of the population IS foreign born and is over 40% in Sydney and Melbourne. Foreigners ARE the majority in huge sections of the cities.

Because when the rest of the world says Australia is racist they are saying white english speakers. They are not saying Australian born Polynesian or Australian born Lebanese or Sudanese immigrant who has gained Australian citizenship.

You can be an Australian citizen, thereby Australian and NOT a foreigner, and yet still have national pride in the country of your heritage. There is nothing wrong in that, if anything it might demonstrate that you are embracing all cultures.
This happen's everywhere, it does NOT make you racist for having pride in your heritage, what makes you racist is castigating those who are not like YOU.

And???? ALL people of ALL countries who have a different heritage to the country they are now citizens of can be loyal to their country of origin. What on earth is wrong with that? Thats not racism, thats called pride.

Few can answer what an Australian is anyway. This country is still finding its identity and that is changing rapidly and will so even more.
For the moment remember Brits and Kiwis are the highest number of total immigrants......

Also having pride in a foreign heritage is bad for this country as it creates dual loyalties posing national security risks.

Re: Racism in OZ
Pretty normal I'd say folk think of others in cliches. No different what others think about Australia.
What is a little odd though is this supposed relaxed country gets so shirty about it. Still caring what others think.
Oh and I've been in countries were it was suggested that Spanish was the language. Many folk know nothing and care less about Australia I'm afraid.
Others do have preconcieved perceptions about it not unlike Aussies do about England and Poms and South Africa and Saffies,etc,etc.....

I said all foreigners are foreigners you fool. I also said the rest of the world immediately labels Australians as white english speakers. Also Australian citizenship means little if your primary loyalty is to a foreign nation. In fact in many countries it is a criminal offence.
Also having pride in a foreign heritage is bad for this country as it creates dual loyalties posing national security risks.

Perhaps this won't be such the case in coming years.....but Australia has barely began to change into what it is going to be in the future.

I don't like the term "pom" and I do think it's racist.
If you swap the word "pom" with the word "different" or "foreigner" then you'll get what I mean.
And the word "pom" is often preceeded by an insult... bloody, whinging etc.
It's a term used to single out someone of a particular nationality.
That's racist.
