Racism in OZ
Hi everyone,
My friend is looking at a possible move abroad. She likes the look of the States but it's pretty much impossible to get in there. I suggested Sydney as it seems like a good option for her. When I suggested it she said she's reluctant as her boyfriend is black and she's heard it's racist. I have no idea where she's heard this from or if it's true.
What are your thoughts and experiences?

My father inlaw told my wife that she would not be successful in Oz because its a sexist country. Strange this to assume when the governer general and the prime minister are women.

Re: Racism in OZ
seeing as this is someones life were talking about i'll bother to give a reasonable answer.
Yes , Australia is a racist country. However it's probably no more racist than any other.
The bad rep for it being more racist than other countries comes from the whites only policy that existed until relativlely recently , the current "aboriginal issue" which seems to be something most people don't really want to discuss and the "boat people problem" and the current offshore solution (great choice of words that folks , no negative conotations with racism at all)
things probably aren't helped by the Australian tendency to speak thier minds which might be quite refreshing in some circumstances but even tho' they're no more racist than other places, those that are are much more up front about it than most people in the Uk for example tend to be.
I wouldn't let it be a major factor in any decission made as it being a place to live ,as i say in reality it's no worse than most other places.

They may seem more racist because they don't mince their words which, like you say, is quite refreshing at times.......other times cringe-worthy
I haven't noticed racism on a personal level, they tend generalize much more "The Asians are this" or "The Lebos are that"

To be honest Australia doesn't appear to suffer from political correctness gone COMPLETELY mad.... Unlike certain other countries.... No names no pack drill...
Yes, you occassionally hear people say stuff the thought police would have you banged up for thinking to yourself at home....
If you aren't white, male and born in Australia you may need to develop a thicker skin than required in some other countries...
You may not.

Re: Racism in OZ
I am just so sick of this international conspiracy of attacking Australia.
I have met Taiwanese people who believed Australians use to practice cannibalism.
I have met Malaysians who believe they will be shot if they walk on someone's property.
I have met a Polish guy who claimed Australia had slavery until the 1970s(despite the fact that Australia has never had slavery).
I have met Pakistanis who truly believed it was an Australian cultural practice to have sex with Dogs.
And I have met plenty of people from several countries who are shocked to find out that Australian women have the vote - despite the fact the colony of South Australia was second in the world to give women the vote in 1894(NZ in 1893) and that women got the Federal vote in 1902.
There really does seem to be some kind of organised international conspiracy spreading pure lies about Australians.

It's a FACT Australians will eat ANYTHING so long as it's been barbied
You will only get shot if walking off WITH some ones property
The minimum wage sounds like slavery
And Australians prefer having sex with SHEEP
Ok... Shielas may have the vote, but that doesn't mean they know what to do with it
