Truckers..... are we needed in WA!!
I have recently read in the Emigrate Oz paper that the ATA are trying to get truck driving on the SOL. Does anyone know anything?? Also, are there any problems transferring you UK license into Australia? I have heard they are having problems with them e.g classes and sub catergories.

My husband is just leaving the army after 22 years. He is fully qualified/experienced in all aspects of HGV/ADR etc. We always planned to move abroad but were gutted to realise we couldnt go to OZ on the basis of his job. The same is true of NZ but you can apply for a work-to-residence visa for 2 years in the hope you can obtain permanent residency at the end of it. We researched this option thouroughly & decided that in our circumstances it was too risky at this time.
We have now been living in private rented accommodation in the south-west for 2 months. There is work, but the wages are way below average. We have come to the realisation we will NEVER be able to afford to buy our own home & the future here in UK looks a bit bleak to say the least! This has once again got us looking into other options. I guess we are lucky as we have no ties in the UK. But finding the right place to go & being eligable to 'get in' is a different matter!
After reading your post I sent a cheeky email to WA immigration. I recieved a reply today saying that WA immigration are currently reviewing the skills list & that it is altered from time to time so it is worth checking it regularly to see if any occupations are added. I wish I could tell you something a bit more positive...but at least there is hope!
We will certainly be keeping a close eye on it from now on.
Good luck with it, if you hear any news, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Just a quickie as I am at work. Hopefully not for much longer
We are using an agency called 'Visa-Unit'. If you wanted to give them a call then PM me and I will give you there number. We are speaking to an Aussie guy there and he has given us the names of some companies who are desperate for Truck drivers and are willing to sponsor you on a 457 visa. We gave the company a call and so did our agent. It seems very promising. And we were told that we could get there much quicker if sponsored as the DIMIA put the paperwork together faster. Don't know how true that is but OH wants to take it a bit more slowly than 6 months.
As we are both looking at the same option it would be great to keep in touch. I get the newpaper once a month on Oz, which is where I get most of my information from. Let me know if you would like them and I can pass them on.

We too are hoping that truck drivers will be added to the sol list. We read an article in The Western Australian that there is a 'chronic' shortage of truck drivers!
The latest we have heard is that DIMA are holding talks with ATA this month so fingers crossed.
Its nice to hear of others hoping to go along the same route!!

Thats what we have read too. It was in the emigrate Oz paper. Try speaking to Visa Unit as they are helpful and we are in talks with a company to sponsor us. Early days mind you, but will keep you informed as it may help you also.
Keep in touch Jay, and if you need to know anything just PM me. Will do my best to help.

Re: Truckers..... are we needed in WA!!
Look at the mining industry this is a booming sector and they are finding it hard to get people, this is not down to wages either, there is big money to be made there but the shifts are long.
Some examples are 5 weeks on 9 days off doing 12 hour shifts but also 2 weeks on 1 week off.
From what I can gather as i have family who work in the mines is that they will try to accomodate people as much as is practical to do so, so there is some flexability.
Transport to and from the mines including accomodation, food and water, Gyms plus many other things are all paid for by them, nothing is taken from your wages.
Its in their interest to keep their workers happy since their away a long time from home, I know this may not appeal to everyone but i thought that it would give some people a different approach to what they want to do in working in oz.
Im still doing my homework but it looks promising if your willing to work hard there are big rewards to be had by all.
If anyone would like any other info as i get it, i can post it here.

Hiya Michelle,
Sorry to take so long to get back to you. Always seem busy with work and the bloody kids (hehe)
Anyway, I have found an agent in Perth who is contacting companies on our behalf. If you want his details just PM me.
Any info I find out on HGV I will let you know asap. Still digging myself to find out more.

Hi all,
my OH also would consider being able to get a job as truck driver in WA.
While I am the main applicant, my husband would need to work as well and he is a relief truck, bus and taxi driver.
Are you aware of the procedures to follwo besides obtaining the necesary licence from the authorities.
