Default Training to be a Hairdresser!

Hello to you all.
I am a nurse with a positive skills assessment and we are waiting on our visas.
I have a 17 year old daughter who is in her last year of A levels now.She has always wanted to go into hairdressing but i have discouraged her and encouraged her to continue her education. She has always had on the back boiler the idea of teaching but its not really her passion. She is a good student who is expected to do very well at A level.
The thing is she hasnt really been over enthusiastic about going to live in Oz and did want to go to Uni over here and for us to leave her in the UK,which i wasnt very happy about.
The other day she had been reading on some web site about hairdressing being in demand in Oz and she is all of a sudden excited about this and about going to Oz.
Can anyone tell me how she would go about training over there-is it a college course or not?Do hairdressers earn a decent salary and such?
We are looking to go to the Ormiston area of Brisbane-are there any facilities there for this?
I want to be able to tell her something positive so that it fuels her enthusiasm some more!
Thankyou.
Janice.

Hi Jan,

I also recommend the above www.brishair.com.au, although I trained at their Gold Coast School, there is a few people on this forum training there at the moment, if your daughter goes as a full time student once you have PR she can complete the course in 1 year, she will get her Certificate III and be able to go into a salon as a 3rd year apprentice, she would then do another 1 or 2 years in a salon and then be fully qualified. The salary side of things isn't that great at all, but for somone your daughters age its probably ok to start her off. If your going to live in Ormiston, then she could get to either of the 2 schools, not sure which would be closer though

Good luck

Lisa

Hi

As far as I'm aware hairdressing in Aus is relatively low paid, thus why it's on demand list, no one wants to do it as pay is poor!
Way into training would be pretty much as in UK I'd say, approach individual salons to get paid n trained for working for them for a pittance....

Hi Lisa and thanks for your reply.
It s great to hear from someone who has done the training. My daughter says that she would prefer to go to the Gold Coast School so would that be as near to Ormiston as Brisbane School ?
The costs don t seem too bad - if she was going on to Uni there would be quite a lot of costs involved too so that side of it is simular i think. Also, she would probably still live at home if she went to either School in Oz so there would be less costs there too.
This is something she has always wanted to do but hasn t dare say really because of her being a good scholar she felt she was expected to go to Uni and study teaching or something which isn t really her passion.
Would she still be classed as a dependant then if she enrolled on one of these courses because she needs to so that she can be included on our visa?
Thanks for the replies .... as always!

I went into hairdressing when I was 15. I am now 31 and still really passionate about it.. I simply love it! You get to socialise all day, it's very creative and it keeps your mind active as you need to keep yourself updated all the time. It is as challenging as you want to make it. I am really appreciated by my clients and I feel very lucky to be loved for something that I enjoy doing soo much!

Don't get me wrong, I am interested in many other things and while working in hairdressing I have managed to study a BA in tourism management and an MA in translation.. I still wouldn't give up hairdressing for anything.

I have worked as a hairdresser in Spain, England and I am now moving to the US and I am very excited about working in hairdressing in a 3rd country.. Hairdressing in the US needs some updating (their hair styles seem so tacky!) and I might be able to contribute to this updating.. I am certainly going to try!

Let your daughter do what she wants to do, we only live once and we never regret the things we do, only the things that we don't do. Oh! and if it helps hairdressing always comes really high (usually first or second) in those polls about "jobs that people enjoy doing"

Best wishes
