A few years ago I was behind an Irish customer in Asda (in Scotland) whose credit card was declined. He didn't have enough sterling cash to cover his purchase, so tried offering some Euros ... no luck there, of course. (I understand a few tourist-type places in England do, usually at lousy rates of interest, but in Scotland, hundreds of miles from the nearest Eurozone country?!)

I seem to remember Canadian shops near the border often take USD, for obvious reasons. Not great exchange rates though...

... you were barely middle-aged when you came here and now you are beginning to realise unless you do something pretty soon you'll die here.

And not just because of the poor quality bacon and dreadful tea.
