I swear this is true:
There used to be a good looking woman in yellow convertable fiat coupe on the M40 around Banbury that would drive slowly, very slowly past truck drivers with her skirt round her waist, panties around her knees and she'd be playing with herself while looking up at the drivers..sometimes using a vibrator.
Rumour had it she did it on her way home from work around 6 pm every night. All the truck drivers CB radio's would be buzzing about it.

Thanks for all the advice folks.
I shall take a trip to my friendly local car dealers before making any decisions.
Do you think its reasonable to expect a second-hand merc for under $10k ??

<sarcasm abates> - You can get a reasonable C class for under 10k too.

a wrangler is like a lotus elise, fantastic fun, but only as a second or third car
i think getting a good merc for under 10k will be challenging
who are you getting financing through? what rate?
the interest rate being charged makes a big difference to affordability

Re: Would you buy a Jeep Wrangler ???
We have one and we love it! It copes just fine in a freezing New England winter and I feel very safe in it in the snow....good 4 wheel drive. It's brilliant fun in the summer....we just take the roof off altogether and go. In the spring we take the hard top off and store it and put the soft top on. It's a way cool vehicle. Yes, it's noisier inside but that's half the experience. It's never broken down or had any mechanical problems and it's tough as old boots. Not much trunk space but you can put the back seat down completely flat or even take it out altogether and there are tons and tons of extras options if you want to customize it up a bit. We're thinking of putting a lift kit on ours. I say go for it. Don't listen to the bloody pensioners in here!

The intention is to put 5k down and finance the rest, paying it off over 6 months to improve my credit so rates are largely irrelevant for me.
