I find it hard to understand why people are so rude and ignorant toward Kate just because she is American ? I find that even in the roughest areas over here people go out of their way to be nice toward me because I am Engilsh.

It makes Kate feel she never wants to go back again and I can't blame her.

I have now got only two real reasons to go back again ... My 25 year old Son ... who I adore and my 23 year old daughter who seems to hate me at the moment but I believe will one day grow up.
pleased you are back and that ordeal is over, sounds horrendous.

strange reaction that from folks towards your wife...i know the americans have not been too popular as a race for some time around the world however it's very rude to take that approach with individuals. my usc hubs is in blighty right now and has no problems...maybe that's because he lived there for 18 yrs and understands us and our wit. i can sympathize with kate, when surrounded by unfriendly people it's not nice.

Unfortunately in a lot (not the majority by any stretch, just a lot) of cases this is true, and people tend to remember the bad examples of stuff more than the good.
That said maintaining your preconceived notions of what someone will be like for more than 5 minutes after meeting them is stupidity in the extreme.

Americans do belong to the race of humankind, but since the US is a melting pot of ethnicity, I would class Americans more as a nationality. Popular or not, somehow people still want to come here......

Patrick tell your wife to insult people back while smiling next time.. It really puzzles them or to be very kind in return (it is hard to do but makes people feel very guilty)..

The way you talk about your son and daughter I suspect that they are from a previous marriage, maybe that's what bothers people? I am totally guessing and speaking my mind (and probably getting myself in trouble as usual )..

So sorry to hear about your trip Patrick, it did sound a nightmare. Lets hope things now improve for you.

It dose and can, especially in my case with two grown Daughters back home, when I've had to attend a family gathering which included my Ex & his family I feel it's best to go along with out my OH now, and he is quite happy with that, after all I did have another life before I met him.

Unhappy Re: Worse trip to UK ever.

Pat,

Sorry for the all-around bad experience.

As for circling London, testing a defective engine, with passengers on.....I sure as hell won't be flying Virgin anytime soon

Virgin isn't worth a blow on a Ragman's Trumpet, in my opinion, if they get up to those tricks. It's American or BA for me.

Jim.

What you say makes sense - it could just be the "outsider who took our Pat away" syndrome...

Still bloody bad manners, of course...

We flew Virgin Gatwick to Newark back in 1986 when they had only 2 planes. On the return trip one of the engines failed on takeoff and we spent the next hour dumping fuel over new york before making an emergency landing. We were put up in a hotel till the next day until they could fix it.

Couldn't think of a better place to dump fuel
