Somewhere near to the coast, but not super expensive would be great.

How about the north coast? Cleveland OH is certainly affordable.

Can't say I find the summer heat and humidity very pleasant in VA, that and the level of racism I experienced when I used to work there occasionally (Richmond, Chesapeake) was not very attractive.

I'd say go for the PNW.

I would suggest staying away from any part of VA that's within, say about, 75 miles of DC. Traffic's a bitch, home prices are astronomical and there are very high taxes. I just heard about the other half's coworker who took an hour to drive six miles in northern VA yesterday.

Many many thanks to all of you. I will look at all the places. most of which i had never considered.
The way we are planning on getting our green card (the d.v lottery) is like peeing in then wind, i admit.
But i (we) have to remain optimistic and put some hope into something right now. I will not give details, but the last year has been a really tough one for my wife and i.

Again, thanks for your great help.

Stuart.:)

What's your line of work going to be?
We were thinking Portland for a bit but are sticking with Marin for now. (Though I am getting concerned about cost of living!)

I have lived just north of Gulf Shores for the last ten years. It is a great part of the world except when a hurricane is coming right at you. It is in Baldwin County, Al if you want to check it out situated between Mobile and Pensacola.

Hove nailed on the head!!! (Hey Hove, I used to moor my boat at Cd'L and grew up in Spokane/Billings).

Anyway, I left the area about 15 years ago after school and returned only for a few living stints. I have lived in Alabama, DC, Brazil, Africa, and now I'm in Abu Dhabi. From that I have also traveled to many other spots and I can honestly say, THERE IS NOWHERE AS AMAZING AS THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST!!! (PNW = Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana)

If you really think about it, the PNW is really the last settlement in the WORLD (we're only 200 years old)! From our pioneering days, we have developed as individual personalities from living off the land. Because of that, I find that people are Resourceful, intelligent, curious and friendly. So combining the geography and the people of the PNW, makes it truly the greatest place in the world!!

I will return.....but I'm still pioneering!!

Another Vote for Portland, Oregon. This place is full of outdoor stuff to do!

Nevermind the wet weather, If your into Mountain's/Ocean/Rivers/Forests i dont think you could find a better place than Oregon. all within 1 hours drive (the way i drive :-) )

Personally i prefer pubs/nightlife myself :-), But i do appreciate the outdoors here

I just got back from Dallas Texas, while i enjoyed myself i feels very different to England and Portland some-how feels alot like England.....:-)

Maybe its the rain???

I love that place. If I wanted to live in a place where no one would ever want to visit me, I'd choose there. Absolutely nothing to do unless it snows and you own a snowmobile ;)

I make a vote for Milwaukee! I find it's a lot like home. We're a very European city and the biggest German city outside of Germany. I was never a fan of German culture before moving here but it's pretty much forced upon you- not that it's a bad thing once you get used to it. Gotta love the good food and lots of German beer! :D Prost! :D
