If I feel mean I say the name of the township I live in here and then I feel awful.
Just the other day I was talking to the principal of my daughter's middle school and he kept on asking odd things about the PTA and it all seemed really awkward and then I realised all the library staff were standing behind me listening to my accent. They had been signaling to him to keep me talking.

Normally I can talk the hind leg off a donkey but when that happens I just dry up completely.

They are very strange here! A few times during one of the fog conversations the topic has moved onto Sherlock Holmes and I'm sure they think we all walk around in greatcoats and deerstalker hats, flagging down horse drawn hackney carriages.

I do the same thing sometimes if I can't be bothered to explain. No wonder people are confused by me

I've actually been asked if Scotland has indoor toilets ~ usually my look of disgust gives the answer away. Then they feel awful for asking such an idiotic question

Tell me about it, one of my little sister's sorority mates was convinced that we didn't have indoor plumping or electricity and was very surprised when I coldly informed her that we had both. I was also able to assure her that my husband did not go off to work in bowler and pin stripe suit with a brolly tucked under his arm.

And of course, I have had the stereotypical question asked many, many times from people who do know where Scotland is, or have an idea. "Ah, you come from the country where men wear skirts. Do they wear them every day?" I always feel like giving them a lecture in apparel and customs, but there again I am too lazy, so just say "No" with another opened mouthed look

If I have time to kill and fancy a giggle I say "where do you think I'm from ?"
Then after the umpteenth guess I say England.

With kids, I always say "It's a country beginning with S?" They have a great time coming up with all the countries they can think of beginning with S, and Scotland is hardly ever one of them. Then I give them another clue, and so on........sometimes it lasts all day

i was so shocked and surprised i asked #1 assistant what did i say to make her think that and she said she couldn't put a finger on it, just the way i phrased my sentences (we had chatted for a while as she had admired the jacket i was wearing.
