I've actually had a worse response than that, Poppy girl. Try: "Oh, England, is that in London?"

I've also been asked what language I speak in Scotland. With the added bonus of them saying that I speak English very well, and was it hard for me to learn it

If someone asks where I am from as opposed to where I was born or where I grew up I usually just say "California" since that is where I am "from". I have spent almost half my life here and certainly more time here than in any other one place.

Britain. Next question that follows " I thought you were Irish" or " You sounded Scottish, why did you say British?'
I am proud to be British, my OH is English, I am Scottish and our children could claim either. I must admit I get more attention than the OH, but he does seem to adopt the accent from where we are living very quickly. They just loooove me!

When I'm in the US, I just say Ireland. The accent is generally a bit of a give-away, so most people figure it out.
I did have one drunk guy who had to ask, and then he told me he'd love to go to Ireland as he always wanted to see Stonehenge. When I informed him that going to Ireland might not be the best way to bring that dream to fruition, he looked amazed and said "really?!? It's just as well I asked you about it before I went".

Same here. More often than not they've figured out I'm English from the accent, so saying "England" seems redundant. I grew up about 30 miles outside of London, but on a US scale that's close enough.
My wife's from Maine, and Brits are just as bad. At best, people know where Boston is, and she says "well, about a 5 hour drive North of that". At worst, people only know where NY is, so she has to explain she's about a 10 hour drive North of that, which in the mind of an English person is basically saying it's the same as the drive from Lands End to John O'Groats!

I say England. If the person then asks me if I miss London, I usually say I moved here from Liverpool.
Just lately we have had a few misty mornings and if one more dog walker asks me if the fog reminds me of home I will scream
