Dave's Killer Bread....yes and if you want a good bread machine....Panasonic. If you want to bake wholeweat bread in the Panasonic, try a flour that is finely ground and sifts completely through the sifter. We have two Panasonics, excellent machines.

Trader Joe's ciabatta is the the one I've settled on. I buy a few loaves (±$5 a piece aaaargh!) at a time, slice 'em up and keep it in the freezer since it's rock hard by day 2.

Safeway's French baguettes are pretty good, make sure you buy the French one not the other options that are packaged very similarly.

I always enjoyed the bread from Esthers German bakery on San Antonio Road in Mountain View. And you can also visit Dittmers nearby for German sausage! BTW I remember Trader Joe's stocking La Brea baguettes etc.

In general, I find most of Trader Joe's products much better than Safeway, Vons etc. Try their 'unexpected cheddar' for proper English bite (great on that ciabatta I mentioned). Their wine and beer is also much cheaper than the other supermarkets in my area and they have a lot of imported wine from the smaller wine producing countries. Three cheers for TJ!

I tried a loaf from Alvarado Street Bakery, and was pleasantly surprised...it was pretty good, and the one I tried (Sprouted Whole Wheat) didn't have any added sweeteners, though some others from their range do.
Also, just bought a loaf from Killer Dave (21 Whole Grains), which I will try tomorrow...likewise, no sweeteners, though some others do....so I guess you just need to be careful and look at the ingredients.
