Where to buy decent bread in Bay Area?
We just moved to Los Altos/Mountain View in Northern California, and being a lover of proper bread that we can easily get in the UK, I was wondering if anyone knew any places close by where we can buy fresh bread that is not overly sweet (laced with sugar/honey), as most bread here seems to be!

If you haven't already discovered the Milk Pail for produce and cheese, I suggest you go. It's both excellent and very cheap

Thanks N1cky, I will give that a go. I was in Whole Foods yesterday, and bought their own brand whole wheat bread, thinking it would be similar to their own brand wholemeal bread in the UK (which is good), but was mistaken...it was sweetened for the US market!

Re: Where to buy decent bread in Bay Area?
I am constantly disappointed by Whole Foods.
My current favorite bread is the whole grain loaf from La Brea Bakery. It is "slightly" sweetened but not to an extent that I find objectionable. I can get it at a local grocery store in Scotts Valley - I am sure that there are other places in the Bay Area that have it but, unfortunately, the "where to buy" link on the web site does not appear to be very functional ...

Do you guys have 'Jimbo's' up there?
I've bought some decent bread there before. You pay for it,though.
Failing that, get a bread maker. It's nice to make a fresh loaf on the weekend.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've checked on the La Brea and Jimbo's websites, and there don't appear to be any stores near me....however I think Acme should be easier to find.
All this, just for something that should be really easy to find. I'm just so surprised that Americans can eat that rubbish...which is not even fresh anyway...most bread seems to have a shelf-life of a few weeks!

We quite like the bread from Alvarado Street Bakery, and have developed a penchant for sourdough over the years

For sliced 'Dave's Killer Bread' isn't too bad (available in most supermarkets).

Don't know if it is still there, and probably the wrong side of MV for you, but there used to be a bakery in Sunnyvale that was pretty good. I can't remember the name of the place now but it was on Maude between Mathilda and Mary.

Google "no knead bread" and make your own.
When I make it I have to make two loaves because the first is gone within and hour.
There's nothing quite like "fresh, just out of the oven crusty bread" slathered with butta.
