Rules can change, but mine was a provisional two year GC, I had to "trade it in" for a 10 year version (with concomitant form filling and providing copies of joint signed lease, evidence of joint back account/credit cards, etc.), which absent a rugby conversion to naturalized USC, I would have had to replace it with a "fresh one" every 10 years. Another poster posted pointed out elsewhere on this site that "permanent" is only permanent until it is not permanent, meaning "permanent" residents can be deported more easily than naturalized USCs.
