Didn't want to hijack Rockgurl's thread.

Someone posted that their quality of life is much higher in the US than they experienced in the UK.

In what way(s)?

I have a better car (although this is more down to depreciation)

I have a bigger house (although this is because nashville is cheaper than hertfordshire)

I have better weather (although this would be negated by living in other regions of the USA)

I have seen more professional sports games and live concerts in two year than in the rest of my life

for sure we are all different with different expectations in life....for me bigger is not always better...bigger house, bigger car... the sun shines...lol doesn't interest me one iota, what matters to me is people/life/humour ...and sadly the american people just don't do it for me....

I don't get that one either, you work longer hours, get less vacation are expected to do more as far your kids and the community is concerned. If you live in a specific area you may be able to buy a bigger house for the money but not always, I earn less than I did in the UK.

Seeing as "Quality of life" is subjective (as the word quality is a subjective word) then this surely is a redundant thread. I have a pool in my back yard in the USA does that make my quality of life better? I dont know, I work longer and harder for less money and have less time to enjoy my pool and kids. I would rather work less and spend more quality time with my kids.

The good news is that there are dickheads in this world who think that just because something is different it is better. Different is different and thats it.

The grass may be greener on the other side, but its still grass!

You have a massive house in blighty anyway. Unless you moved into the White House you prob wouldn't notice much difference

When I lived in Cambridge we used to go to London all the time and see shows, concerts and Sports teams. Now I live in Wilmington - 4 hours from the nearest Football team, 7 hours from the nearest baseball team, 3 hours from the nearest big concert hall - we dont. Thats not really quality of life, more like better location.

I think cost also comes into it, I was in a good location in the UK for these types of events, but i found it a bit pricey

I personally spend less time working but actually have more stress and earn about what i did in the UK

I like 'grilling out' 2-3 times a week between april and october

I like doing stuff during the weekday evenings here unlike in the UK where most of the time my friends reserved their social life for the weekend

My husband actually had a longer work week (although his actually work hours were 37.whatever) and made slightly less than he does here. Here he works 3.5 days (yes they are 12 hour days - but he has more days off to spend at home) and his income is steadily climbing. In his job in the UK he was becoming stagnant - here he is very well respected for his knowledge and views on technology - Go West Young Man, you'll go far - isn't far off the mark for him. I put it all down to his charming British accent.....and he probably knows a thing or two.

Is it a cliche that my standard of living here is better, but quality of life worse ?

No pubs, no vacation and more stress, but more money, house and cars.

I believe there's two different standards:

Quality of life -> Which is s**t in the US because of vacation time, no socialised healthcare etc...

Standard of living -> Which is great in the US because you can buy lots of stuff with the money you didn't pay in taxes for the socialised healthcare.
