We can't help it, we might do the same in private with friends but never in public. Our parents beat it into us!

The cursing level on MI-5 (Spooks) is high compared to American TV. I'd completely not realised that until my mother and daughter were watching an episode with me and I had to ahem and apologise for the curse words (which, I assured them both, were very few).

Yes and no. It's considered polite not to swear, regardless of one's particular religious beliefs. Obviously, some religions take this more seriously than others. We cannot swear at work towards customers, for example, and I take a dim view of customers who swear at me.

No, I save my string of curse words for close friends and family.

Yeah the whole swearing thing is a big issue here isnt it? I have become very aware of my swearing, and even been made aware of words that I use that I didnt even think constituted swear words....alot of the people I know are really uptight about it..

not long ago we were watching a film on tv and my jaw almost hit the floor when they bleeped out the word "goddam"...if thats considered swearing then I was damned to hell a long time ago

I feel the same way. I have a son in nappies & still don't throw out as much as some people do. I guess it's from all the packaging that gets over used here. Back home I would only throw out 1 or 2 sainsburys bags full of rubbish a week for the 3 of us, as I had a recycling facility not too far away & recycled almost everything! I haven't been able to find one here, so have to throw everything in the rubbish now.

Here's a great example of sensorship gone mad here! I was watching 'The long kiss goodnight' on tv here, don't ask me why as I actually have it on DVD!!! There is a part where Gina Davies asks Samuel L Jackson if he's Mormon as he complained about her swearing. He replys, "Yes, I'm a mormon, that's why I just smoked a pack of Newports & drank 3 vodka tonics...". Well in the TV version, they changed Mormon to Minor! I was shocked to say the least!!!

I must say that I'm a particular fan of the word w*nker. A lot of people over here are clearly not familiar with it which means that you can say it repeatedly to their face and they are none the wiser. It worked a treat at the DMV yesterday when I repeatedly called the manager a w*nker. I moved instantly to laughing at myself from a situation where I was periously close to dragging him over the counter and battering him.

I know that people have expressed their dislike of "fake" swear words but i have to confess that i'm a great fan of the words f.e.c.k, pish and shi'ite.

Yep, same with my parents. Swearing was not allowed whilst growing up, and its not something I do a lot of as an adult. Will try to pass this on to my kids too.

Must admit I do have a few moments in private though. But my swearing vocabulary is limited to bollocks, wanker, bastard and bloody hell.

By the way, I'd just like to point out that i'm not a rampant swearer and that if i'd sworn in front of my parents growing up that I'd have got the belt/slipper to the back of the legs.
Having said that sometimes only a swear word will do, especially when watching/playing sports.
