Dusted off the cv and updated it there - now to get it out there, though i notice that lots of companies make you fill out an online application form which is a bit of a pain in the ass.
Anyway, the search is commencing - i have 6 weeks to find something else with the reward being 3-4 months extra salary which would conveniently be enough to clear all my UK debt including student loans, plus leave me with enough for a decent down payment on a car

Good plan to find something else before you leap.
Many high-tech companies have the right to refuse someone's asking for voluntary redundancy. This is a polite way of saying that if they want to sack you, and you ask for redundancy, they'll give it to you; but if they don't, they won't. Because of this stigma, sometimes future employers look on those who took voluntary redundancy as sub-average workers.
If you end up taking it without another job lined up, or take it anyway, it's best if you can truthfully say that you and all your colleagues in your department, division, product line -- whatever -- were mercilessly annihilated, but that you don't take it personally.
As a USC I would not take VR if I'd been in a position less than a year without something 100% sure to go to, because of the unemployment insurance payout issue, and because a year shows that you can stick to a job for a reasonable amount of time.
And of course, the IT industry is still not back to previous staffing levels. Are you willing to relocate? take a pay cut? retrain in a different field? Most people find themselves out of work for a LOT longer than they had anticipated.
Best of luck with whatever you decide.

Re: Voluntary Redundancy - should I take it ???
You might think that that if you take the voluntary redundancy, you'll be safe in your job but maybe within the next year, you'll be laid off anyway. This could be reasons such as your job being outsourced (overseas) or your section being sold off.
On the other hand, if you take the vol. redundancy do you have an idea how long it'd take to get another job? What's the job market like for your industry in your area? Are/have employers in your industry and your area laid off workers too?

Thanks for the advice folks.
I have 45 days from now to accept the VTO offer which has been made available to all IT staff (so its not just cos I'm a muppet !!).
So that's basically 45 days to find something else or else I'll stay here.

Well, actually it could be worse but it is extremely boring. Some of my colleagues are a good laugh though.
