I see you now understand the process better... but I just wanted to mention that when I did my marriage-based AOS, it took 33 months for me to get a GC: from June 1998 to March 2001. Do you know why it never bothered me? I had both AP and an EAD, which I renewed 3 times in the interim... but mostly because I looked at immigration as an adventure and not a burden. No big deal.
The process has sped up considerably since then! Six months... piece of cake!

General rule: For a combined I-130/485 filing, take a look at the local DISTRICT to, perhaps, maybe, get some idea of time frames.
