Default using UK driving license

Hi,

Is there a time limit on changing from UK to US driving license when entering on a CR1. I have currently been using wife's car on numerous visits as her AAA have me insured using my UK license, can I just continue indefinately like that ?

thanks

Which state are you moving to? It varies by state. Look up the state's Department of Motor Vehicles. Some websites will have clear rules for this but unfortunately some are more nebulous.

Each state has different rules and timescales. If you are a resident rather than a visitor then you will have to change your license at some point. I think it varies from 30 days all the way up to a year.

I would suggest that you check the DMV website for your state.

Wow, 30 days - so you don't have to do a test or learn anything then ? Is it just an admin thing ?

There IS a test, but it's little more than a joke. When I got mine (in GA), the State Patrol officer actually forgot to administer the driving part until I reminded her!

As long as you can point a car in the right direction and parallel park, you passed!

Again it varies by state. In Minnestota I had to take a theory and practical test, pretty easy compared to UK standards though!

The OP needs to go here: http://www.azdot.gov/mvd/azwelcome.asp

I had to parallel park when I took mine in NY as a teenager. DH didn't have to do it in Oregon last year, but he was told that he would be tested on two or three maneuvers out of a possible five different ones, and he wouldn't know in advance which ones he'd be tested on. Parallel parking was one of the five but not one of the ones they chose for him to do.

I had to do the parallel park, years of parking in terraced English streets meant I aced it!

When I did it up in Maine, it was being able to park in a 50 foot space, without any cars...so just a little easy

It generally is a piece of piss, but it is still a test, so no speeding, stop and stop signs and the stop lines/edge of junction if they don't line up, no skidding even in winter snow.

On the theory, read the drivers manual and learn up on the penalty points, especially anything drink drive related and any particular points for under 21 year olds as the test is geared towards them and will be stuff you wouldn't consider other wise.

Other wise, well you'd be embarrassed to fail.

Technically in AZ it's 'immediately', according to the AZ DMV website (http://www.azdot.gov/mvd/azwelcome.asp), but our relo person said that within 30 days is considered reasonable (we're moving there next month). Sooner the better, definitely. Hubby will do his straight away, but I'll hold off until I have a SSN to simplify admin, as the kids won't be in school straight away anyway until we move out of temp accommodation and into a permanent rental.
