we had a hacked one in the UK to play US dvd's and we have a pioneer hacked one (brought off the web pre hacked) to play UK dvd's.

Pioneers can be hacked by updating the firmware but for the average Joe Bloggs this process is a little fraught with the danger of ending up with a brick. Most of the hacks involve using an old palm pilot or similar device to do it via the infra red sensor.

Our Phillips palyer and most of the others from the land of cheap consumer electronics can normally be hack by pressing a few keysrokes on the remote.

Richer Sounds always used to sell unlocked DVD players back in the UK, so they'd be a good bet. Otherwise, just search eBay for "region free dvd" and you'll get lots of hits, on both sides of the Atlantic.
