Default Santa Monica, CA?

Righty-ho....before I do to much googling in depth which leads to nothing, as always so far...just looking for a few possible pointers.

Searching threads over the last few years, everything seems to centre around LA and I'd rather not think of LA.

So what's decently doable or sane for commuting into SM, on the beach? Would you all laugh at wanting to do a half hour or less? How about public transport?

What's the rent stock like? prices been affected at all? How funny would looking for a 3 bedroom house or apartment be?

Childcare, that as miserable to get into as it is where I am? What's a rough pricing? $1500 a month for 3 day weeks like it is my end?

City data and salary calculators for later....for if anything happens

I've lived on the beach in an RV just south (cycling distance) of SM before and I like it. The whole Newport Beach, Redondo Beach, Marina Del Rey, Venice, SM line up the coast seems pretty good if you are going to live in the LA basin - being near the water means the air is almost breathable

SM seems choc full of Brits - Brit boozers and brit food shops, you might be 3 hours further away from Blighty but you have more access to blightydom than most places.

I'm sure someone can answer your q's, that or you'll have to enjoy the delights of craigslist for an hour or two.

haha....I'd settle for a summer at this point in time

And I can't rely on contract work and the next contract gig I'm trying to line up is part of a chain so we'll see if that works out...

I'm not holding massive hope for this SM gig...but I'd say it'd be a nice resume booster...especially after these E3 awards just came out

Daughter lived in SM when she first moved to Cali. She worked in LA, not far in distance but the traffic can be awful at peak hours. She then moved to Marina Del Rey which is a really nice area, and very close to Venice Beach which is "different" but I love it!

Rents are high Bob, there are some nice places but lots of older small apartment blocks that look like they are out of the 40's or early 50's era

Aye, just trying to see which areas to look at that can be handy to commute to SM...seems like not much difference in the money though.

I rather not pay more in rent than we already are, but then we're lucky only to be paying $1350 a month for our apartment as it's around the $3K mark for a house or $1500-3K for a posh apartment....unless we live in more of a shitter

So many beaches...all so the same to me

And Poppy...San Fran is about to drop off the map, but I'd like that too...just having even less luck up there...

I begin work in Thousand Oaks next week. Living in Santa Monica is an option, but I quite fancy Malibu or Ventura - smaller and just that little bit away from the giant urban mess that is LA.

So yeah, I guess if you flip it around, living in Malibu or some other town in Ventura county could be feasible. 30-40min commute, which is not bad by LA standards.

All by car though aren't they? hmmm....

Well if anything happens of this, google will be hit a lot harder than what I've done so far.

It's probably a good 40hr odd art test to get through first though...so yeah, not pinning my hopes just yet

aye, I knew that, but hoping not to have to need it for a work commute between towns.

I'd much rather read or sleep on a commute than be stuck in a car...but the buses look a bit scary..big blue or whatever it was called? That's just around SM, which seems to cover it quite well, but between towns? What the heck..

http://www.catransit.com/links/calinks.html That's not a bad link...but it's all in town services and as I don't really know what I'm looking at, not to much help. Nothing like the MBTA that's in Boston with the T/commuter rail/bus link etc is there?
