Agreed, my reply was firmly tounge in cheek. I was wondering why someone would pose a question without any kind of framing for the reason why they are asking it. Hence the throw-away answer....

Thinking about it....I'm sure you get a bit fed up with people asking questions that have been asked and answered time and time again.....and I understand why you answered like you did now.....

I'm just so used to taking the newbies of yahoo under my wing....its become a habit that is hard to break...... :)

I have to agree with the "come on, do SOME of the work!" attitude.

I enjoy helping people who help themselves. I sometimes get a little ticked off with people who come on here and ask the broadest questions, with little frame of reference and NO EFFORT TO DO A SEARCH FOR SIMILAR THREADS before asking what might be an involved question.

In other words, I don't see why I should spend five minutes helping someone who is "desperate" to get to the US but not desperate enough to spend more than 5 seconds typing a question. I mean, just look at the less-than-helpful title of this thread - "The USA". Dohhhhh!!!!!

I'd rather spend 30 seconds telling them to do a search first - or give me more information. More often than not, they don't even post a second message.

It happens on other forums I use....I just tell them to do a search....then to come back if they need to ask a question not covered by anything on the threads they looked at....but to be honest....most things have been covered time after time.....
If someone were to open with....I have no idea how to use the forum can you point me to where I can find this info.....then maybe they would get more useful posts back from the regs.......

Re: The usa

I'll answer your question:

I didn't WANT to leave Britain, I had no stronger need to come live in America.

I was out here for a summer and met my now husband, and I moved out here to marry him.

4 years down the line, I prefer to stay in the US than move back to Britain, but that may change. Then again I go back at least 4 plus times a year, so I see quite a bit of it!!

It is v. hard to come and live here legally. Most of us are here through work or marriage.

Me too, though I did not ball my eyes out ... men don't do that, well not usually :o But Gaza did, but that was on a soccer pitch during a national game :D Never set out to come to the USA, it was a sort of mistake/accident, but turned out to be a very good mistake ;)

Sorry, without appearing to be rude....how do you manage to return to the UK 4 times a year, at least? I'm asking not from the financial point of view, but from an employment point of view. I work for a HUGE Multinational Pharmaceutical company as a Microbiologist and in return for all my toil, professionally and academically was handed a paltry two weeks for my first year! Well, least the money is great :p

Hubby gets over 5 weeks a year.....and unpaid time off if needed......not that I'd like to go to the UK for just a week at a time..!.....maybe they don't work....not everyone has too......

Maybe your right, I couldn't possibly comment.

I have a keen, well, generalized interest though in the industries in the US that appear to be so generous in the allocation of vacation time that appears to allow a sizeable number of people on this forum to vacation so many times a year. I think that I need to switch from Pharmaceuticals to Teaching ;)

Really, five weeks? That's comparable with what I had in the UK. What industry is your Husband in?....if you don't mind me asking of course! Also, how long has he worked for the company that he is with? I'm acutely aware that American companies do indeed reward loyalty, that is reflected in numerous colleagues that also have comparative vacation times with UK/European standards. However, this level of loyalty is measured in decades, not single digit years. I think that I'm looking at working for P&G for a long time before I can look forward to five weeks.

I think that some people have come over with their companies and are probably receiving the same holiday time they had in the UK.

Hubby is in telcoms......if that helps........I know 5 weeks is more than a lot of people get.....

And I'll reserve my right to say what I think about a pointless and facile question from a newby poster. You try and have a better day than you appear to have started off with!
