Default US Taxes Return After Returning to the UK

Hi all.

Have not posted in a while! Sorry if this is in the wrong place.

So, sadly for a magnitude of reasons, I decided to move back to the UK after 2 and half years in the US.

With tax season fast approaching, I have no idea how this works now I'm back in the UK.

I moved back in September and began working (for the same company, in the UK head office) in October. So I have US USD income from January-September and UK GBP income from October-December.

What is the best way to go about filing my US taxes in January? Can I still use a simple online service like I have done in previous years? Does anyone have any recommendations of companies here in the UK who can assist in preparing my taxes?

Thanks so much in advance!
Ash

What is your citizenship and or what visa/residency did you have while in the US?

Sorry for the late reply. I am a U.K. citizen and held a L1A visa. Lived in CA from March 2014 to September 2016.

Thanks

You should file both US federal and state taxes as a dual status alien

If you used simple online tax filing before, your US taxes will probably still be simple, except for filing dual status. You should still be able to do your own taxes, except you'll need to use software that supports dual-status filing. I know that Tax Act does, but I don't know about the other main packages.

You are still going to need to file an FBAR and Form 8938 if you met the filing thresholds for those forms.
