Default Which US passport to apply for? Passport card?

Hello guys,

those of you that are EU or UK citizens as well US citizens, what size of passport have you applied for? I noticed US has either standard 28 pager or big one 52 pages. Since I also have UK passport I wonder if I need the thicker US passport, I wonder how lourdy it feels in a pocket especially if you travel with two.

So 28 or 52 pages?

Also, have you found the Passport Card useful at all?

Only you know how much you expect to travel, and whether you are going to need the larger number of pages.

I got the 28 page US passport and that has been ample.

I did also get the passport card but only because at very short notice I could have to go into Canada by road, and the passport card is in my wallet. The passport card is not valid for air travel and is really only of use if you go into Canada and Mexico by road and your State doesn't have the enhanced driving licenses. So for most people I doubt there is much need to get it.

That is what I don't know how much I will travel. Usually dual citizens, especially those from Europe, do travel quite a lot. But unlike only US citizens, we don't get to get all these stamps in Europe, because we travel on UK passports there.

Thanks for your input! I probably won't get the passport card then. I thought you can use it for flying too.

I went for the New York enhanced DL when my licence came up for renewal a couple of months ago. We drive into Canada dozens of times a year, so now I won't have to dig out my passport each time. So I don't need the U.S. Passport card. As for number of pages - all my travel is now US / Canada / UK / Europe, so even after ten years I barely fill three or four pages with entry stamps.

I got the card but that's because I live in AZ. I haven't used it though. I don't recall but it was only a small extra cost at the time.

RealID/enhanced licenses keep getting postponed and pushed back.

If you don't know, we sure don't! Size of passport bears a direct relationship to how much you plan to travel.

I read the sprout leaves and you should definitely apply for a 52 pager....

I got the standard passport book and the passport card. I drive to Canada quite often so the card is useful for that and a handy backup if I ever lose the passport book. The card can't be used for flying but at least I can still drive into Canada and back if the book is lost or being renewed. They can be applied for and renewed separately (although you'll end up paying a bit more than if you applied for them together) and so they can have separate expiration dates.

Thanks for you input guys. To share a little more about me. I used to travel a lot (backpacking). But for the last 10 years I have been "stuck" in the U.S., I became citizen just last year so this is my first US passport experience.

I am planning on traveling to Russia and Asia, where I've actually never been before. I may go 2-3 times a year, both for business and pleasure. I may get into backpacking around the world again!

I still have not decided whether I shall be using UK or US passport for that. Since 52 pager is the same price, it feels like a no brainer. But people who backpacked before may confirm that every ounce counts. Especially now that I have to travel with both UK/US passport.

As I never been to Asia before, I have no clue how quickly can these passport pages fill up . Thanks for patiently answering my awkward questions

As a dual citizen I usually use whichever passport is cheaper for me. For example when I went to Brasil I used my UK passport as there was no visa requirement for UK, there was a charge for US. Same for Australia, except that was a real pain to arrive on one passport and leave on another (returning back to US had to use US passport).

I too got the passport card and the only time I ever used it was to apply for TSA Precheck and that is only because it was already in my wallet.

It can also be used on cruises e.g. to Bermuda, Mexico and some Caribbean countries.

Default Country of birth?

so I will apply for the 52 page and will be hoping it won't add a lot of weight on my lightweight travels

What is question "city&country" of birth for me?

- Can I fill in just the country? Because if I write "United Kingdom" (not even the full official version) there won't be any space for my city of birth.

- Can I abbreviate that just to "UK" ?

- Or I can I omit that question completely and have passport without place of birth listed?
