Yes, there are settlements that pre-date this, but I seriously doubt there is anything from 1565 still standing.

If there is, it would be Native American and likely in the West.

South Pasadena - City of Trees...apparently. More interestingly, also City of Michael Myers.

Well, shucks! I almost forgot something in Oklahoma which is VERY much older. We visited it several weeks ago - the Viking Runestone at Heavener in eastern Oklahoma. Dates between 600and 800AD so the experts say.
It's a 12ft high rock in a deep wooded ravine - very picturesque area. the rock contains carvings of Viking runes which have been translated as 'Glomes Valley". Smaller ones were found in the vicinity too. Thought to be territorial markers left by Vikings who managed (Lord knows how) to get to Oklahoma via the Mississippi river. Amazing! Well worth seeing.

Yeah, the oldest structure still standing here is probably the Castillo de San Marcos, a fortress built between 1672-1695. It's the oldest masonary fort in the US.

Hehe! If you're not used to it, some key points:
- In summer, much hotter than you think (low humidity). Drink water by the six-pack.
- Sunblock, lots of. Don't mess with sunscreen.
- Beer will get you very drunk, very quick. (Margaritas even quicker. )
- The drynesss leads to nose bleeds and headaches for a few people. Don't be too surprised.
- Bring hand lotion (yes, even I use it sometimes...)

Many thanks for the good advice, A/P- much appreciated. I think perhaps it would be better to visit in late summer/early autumn - I'm still a tenderfoot (and the rest!)where these hot summers are concerned. But Santa Fe is a definite must - it sounds great.
