Debbie, you should also take a look at my state of Oregon, its a beautiful place and set up for people that love the outdoors, we don't usually get lots of snow so its not disruptive, but we have the coastal range of mountains just a few miles away with skiing in winter if that's what you want, (See Mount Hood and Portland)...

Oregon's coast is very much like England with lots of greenery but that's because we have lots of rain, my biggest negative is that we are so far from the UK.
