Default Car rental - no credit check

Need to rent a vehicle from orlando and drop off in charleston SC the next day. Spoke to Avis and while they do take debit cards - they do a credit check in the UK..... My credit here is pretty cruddy due to an ex of mine....

Does anyone know where I can rent a pickup/SUV/Minivan with a debit card & no credit check - happy to pay deposit etc.

Sure they didn't mean putting a credit hold on the card?

I'd be surprised if a US company or rental office could even do a UK credit check.

A credit check is often required when a debit card is used as the primary form of payment. Hertz and other well-known companies use this policy as a way of determining the liability of the user and the risk associated with him. Those with a low credit score often must place a larger cash deposit or may be turned away from the agency if trying to rent locally.

In most cases, U.S. locations will perform a credit check for debit card renters to determine credit worthiness at the time of rental. The renter must meet Avis' minimum criteria in order to rent. Currently, debit cards are not acceptable as credit identification at the time of rental at locations in the Metropolitan NY Tri-State area, Hartford, CT, Philadelphia area, Mississippi or Louisiana locations as well as other locations across the country. Canada locations do not accept bank debit cards as a form of credit identification.

Also be advised that some Avis locations do not accept debit cards as a form of payment. Avis reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to seek a debit card authorization hold in excess of the estimated rental charges. We will place a hold on your account of $200 plus the estimated rental charges unless you already paid toward your rental, in which case the hold will be only $100. THESE FUNDS WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE FOR YOUR USE. When the rental is over we will process the reversal but the bank may take time to post it back to the account.

If you fail to return the vehicle as agreed, Avis will obtain additional authorizations from your account to cover the rental charges.

Avis is not responsible for any returned checks or over-drafts based on this policy.

This policy applies to both U.S. residents and foreign renters. Positive identification in addition to your driver's license may be required.

In the United States, debit, cash or check cards can be used at the end of the rental for payment of rental charges. For acceptable credit identification and payment methods in countries outside of the U.S., please search for the specific location's Terms and Conditions.

Note: Prepaid debit/gift cards are not acceptable methods of credit identification to pick up a car at any location. One of the above mentioned cards must be presented. Prepaid debit/gift cards are accepted at time of return only.
I don't know that they can do a 'credit check' either. Might want to bring a credit card.

They will do a credit check, but it will probably be a US credit check, which they can't do, in your case. In which case you'll be probably denied a rental. Hopefully you can use a credit card.

Unfortunately I don't have a credit card - think hubby may have to borrow a bigger car and drive down to get me.

But a UK one? We're not doubting that they may run a US credit check, just querying whether they can run a UK credit check from the US.
