Default UK Tax Return

Been in the US for over 20 yrs now and I need to complete a UK tax return for a small amount of UK income (tax year ending April 5th 2025).

Anyone got any good accountants to help this process?

My wife has just completed her first self-assessment after 20 years of not filing, due to starting to receive pension income.

As a UK non-resident, you can't use the HMRC self-assessment forms to submit. She used Andica on-line. £25, very simple - she received her refund in 3 weeks. Looks like there's quite a few online options - much cheaper than turbotax here!!

I am wondering why you are paying tax in the UK, on pensions. My wife and I have 5 UK pensions. and all are no tax in the UK, but taxed in the US.
  • A US resident receiving a UK State Pension or a UK private pension can use Form US-Individual 2002 to apply for relief at source from UK Income Tax, meaning they may receive the pension payment with less or no UK tax already deducted. They will also need IRS form 8802 for the IRS to certify resident status in the US and payment of US tax.
It is a long time since I completed the forms so my memory of numbers etc might not be spot on so hopefully those more knowledgeable will have better details. They are several threads on BE about it, but not in recent times, and I can't find them.

Maybe not relevant to the OP - but you are correct, you should only be paying tax in US not UK on pensions. I applied and received an NT code for my pension, but my wife's pension is well below the personal allowance so we decided not to apply for the NT code for her. She was placed on an emergency tax code and the pension was paid on the 3rd of each month. She managed to end up with 2 payments in the same tax month and consequently had tax withheld. She needed to complete a SA to have the tax refunded. She switched the payment to the middle of the month now to avoid that and after the SA she is no longer on an emergency tax code - so hopefully all will be well ongoing. If the personal allowance is reduced below the pension amount in the future, she'll apply for the NT tax code.

UK tax forms are a lot easier than US ones, and if it is "only a small amount" you may end up paying as much in accountant's fees as in taxes. ..... At very least I'd start by looking at the form and seeing if you have concerns great enough to need professional guidance.
