Were you exchanging $ for pounds? I find a lot of Americans complaining about the prices in UK. I try to explain to them, that prices have not changed, its the exchange rate. When the $ was 1.03 to the pound was beer cheaper? When the $ was 1.97 to the pound, was it dearer?
Gasoline may be cheaper in USA, but add to the price all the tolls & expensive insurance, I'm sure its =.
Last week in Uk London I had a very nice tasting fresh baguette/Chicken/Lettuce/mayo/bacon sandwich £1.95. Find that in NYC. 12 current buns for 99p, where in USA can you get that. Cut bread, less than a £.
UK houses are more then likely BRICK built, not WOOD frame with crapp facings.
US beer, I don't drink it, gnats piss, belly wash. I know woman who can drink 10 or more of them, its piss water.
Please compare apples to apples. Sorry even US apples are crapp.

I was living in central London which was an absolute rip off - so New York to me is cheap, I cant imagine what it is like outside new york, I bet its pretty cheap though

Really? In my experience of living in New York and London they're about the same overall. eg: cabs, subway, restaurants cheaper in New York, beer in pubs/bars, food in supermarkets cheaper in London. Flat rentals about the same, maybe tending to cheaper in London.

I agree NYC and london are pretty much similar for price. people dont generally own cars, get public transport, all much of a muchness.

BTW average house price in UK is £200k.

Beer in oxford average about 2.70 for a stella, so that bloke must have been drinking in the working mans club. One good thing about oxford, blag yourself a student card and you can get a pint for £1.50, laughing.

one more thing, i wouldnt trade 5 weeks standard holiday plus bank holidays for 2 weeks hoilday, cheap petrol, beer that tastes like piss and all you can eat for $9.99.

Think home counties and you have a comparable idea of costs, NJ house prices were pretty steep from what I remember and a pint was comparable, along with restaurants. Supermarkets were cheaper, if you can find one to compare with in Manhattan.

imo grocery shopping is cheaper in the states. in fact queens and the outer boroughs are cheaper than manahattan. As an example I used to pay around 5 pound for a nice piece of salmon that is half the price here

a dollar for a pint of milk, $4 plus for bread, $5 for a box of bloody cornflakes.. I've just been to buy something for tea, nothing fancy, some meat, baked potatoes, salad, loaf of bread..$35..no way is it cheaper, well definitely not in California, its horrific.

House prices in this part of New Jersey are high compared to where I lived in the UK (Cheshire). Eating out is cheaper as is petrol, price of cars, clothes. It is the hidden costs that are more here ie car ins., medical ins., council taxes, university costs. I also believe that it is much cheaper to go on holiday. Quite often it costs less to get a package holiday from UK to USA than costs me to holiday in the US.

might be cheaper, but often the quality is crap unless you pay and arm and a leg for it or go looking in specialty stores, most supermarkets around here just aren't as good for the everyday things.
