Default UK passport countersignature issue

I am applying for a renewal of my child's UK passport. We live in the USA, but for less than 2 years, so I don't know anyone who can countersign it here who has known him the required 2 years! So, do I really have to send all the paperwork to the UK, to be signed by someone who has known my child 2 years to then have it sent back to me to send to the passport office in Washington DC
thanks!

Anyone can sign it, it's only suggested that you use a British citizen.

Yes you can use a USA citizen. We recently used my husbands HR director. I think as long as its someone "professional" it's fine and not a family member of course.
