Two Times!!!

What ever happened to the word twice? Why do Americans use "two times" instead of twice. I noticed it on an advert the other day now I cant stop listening for it, no-one says twice, why, why, why?

Blowing off any real responsibility caused by the f(ckup. I detest that phrase. It's a Gen Y thing -- how hard can it be to say "my mistake"?

Patrick -- where have you seen "two times"? In advertising I rather like the use of 200% vs twice or two times. :D

Because two times two is 4 and two times twice is

Easy really  :D

"One time.... two times.... three times a lady"

Patrick, I'd be more worried that "thrice" is an endangered species.

I "might could" understand it if they speak a different language ... oh, hang on, they do.

If it's "not my bad", does that mean it's "my good"?

This one annoys me. Loud people on cell phones starting the conversation with........"where you at?"

Is that just a Texas thing or is it all over?

How about people using their cells on speakerphone. I was on a train from NYC, a 1 hour journey and there was a guy on his speakerphone the whole way.

The number thing......two hundred eighty instead of two hundred and eighty. The host on one of our local radio stations says 7 clock instead of 7 o clock.

That would annoy the living snot out of me.

Re: Two Times!!!

I have also noticed that a lot of Americans cannot comprehend "double" as in spelling out a name L Y double N E. I spelt it that way to one lady on the phone and she read it back as "LYWE".

A lot will also say "one time" as opposed to once.

My other pet peeves are:
overages
arrearages
and winningest :D

Also the use of forty seven hundred dollars rather than four thousand seven hundred. Does anyone know why the Americans will refer to wood as a 2 x 4 whereas in England we call it a 4 x 2.

I can accept most of the phrases I hear - different parts of England have their own slang too but 'where you at?' is one of the few that gets me. Boost Mobile even use it as their tag line :( .

I once asked for the nearest cross street and one of the streets sounded like Deevorn ... I asked them to spell it, and it was Devon. Blew me away times two. ;)

...
But then again, when I was driving to my new post-doc at Bath University, I asked someone on a country lane if I was going the right way for Bath. He looked at me sideways and up-side-down, and then from top to bottom, then bottom to top and said (starting off slowly), I've never heard of Bath, but Baaaattthhhh is that way. :D
