I'm not in the shipping business at all, but I do have some background in logistics. I have to say I'm somewhat surprised that they don't just offload these containers on a freight train and send cross-country that way. Or on the back of a truck. It seems like it would be a lot quicker!

I think it's a combination of cost, speed, and capacity. A typical container train in the US only moves at under 25mph on average (including terminal time). A lot of track is single track so a train can wait for over an hour to get a path to the next passing loop (siding). Then crews run out of time and need to be relieved. Yes, I'm a train buff!

Then trucks can only drive for something like 12 hours a day so they're not necessarily much quicker, and of course don't have much capacity!

So while a ship going all the way around the southern states and Mexico might seem a long way, it's probably more efficient in terms of capacity and cheaper!

Thanks! Hopefully less nipping out to the nearest store to buy widget X because it's on the boat!

You do know its traditional to nip down and pay the crane operator a wee "bonus" to make sure he doesn't drop your container over the side as he's unloading, right....?

I'd go and lift it myself if I could! Shows as moored now - next customs, then trucked to a removals company in Corona, then trucked to my door. Hopefully. And hopefully within a week or two, without customs charging a fortune!

Well, she's on her way again, so hopefully she managed to get your container safely ashore. The cargo tracking handling and management systems invovled in these container ports and ships are nothing short of that much overused word - awesome!

"Discharged from vessel at last port of discharge" - hopefully by crane not by torpedo! JUN-26-2012 00:13

6th July - "Picked up for delivery at destination". No word from Graebel so it's time to ring them I think!

Not very happy. Graebel have finally arranged a delivery date of... 8th August, two weeks tomorrow "because they're busy and on red alert" (whatever the latter means). That'll be 18 weeks door-to-door, four of which sat in their warehouse in Corona, after an estimate of 9-13 weeks. Explained in the phone call that this is extremely disappointing and ultimately costing us money but she wouldn't budge or acknowledge how long they've had the container. Polite snottogram sent to Pickfords in the UK but I doubt they can do anything.

Duly noted - never ship anything if at all possible. Seems ridiculous they are happy to hold onto your stuff 'because they are busy'

That sucks Geoff, sorry.
Complain to Pickfords, emphasize how inconvenient it's been not having anything and see if they'll do anything for you. They may not but it's worth a shot.
