Well, I must admit I'm not gonna eat kidneys - I know what those things do

You mostly need a butcher that actually cuts up the meat to get suet. Places do sell suet for bird food - but that's not the same. The suet you want is the nice hard fat from around the kidney of beef. Suet for birds is any old icky fat ground up. But anyone that actually cuts up the meat should be able to get you some suet. They may not like to grind it up, as it gums up the grinder. I froze mine, then shredded with the food processor - it came out terrific.

Bread : I would KILL for a loaf of Warburtons! ! Why does practically ALL bread here taste sweet???

Bacon : whats with the fatty, streaky bacon? Most of the bacon sold here would be sold as 'scrap ends' in the UK. Now don't get me wrong I like a bit of crispy rind BUT seems like here the whole thing is FAT

Tomatoes : why are they so tasteless here? They seem almost bland. Oh a decent pound of cherry toms ( with that almost 'nutty' flavour ) would go down a treat!

Cheese : I love a sweaty ripe stinky cheese - cant seem to find ANYTHING here that doesnt taste like that processed crap! Most of it tastes like that Kraft singles rubbish -- ugh! Anyone recommend a cheese worthy of the name? BTW i would think I had died and gone to heaven if I found some Stilton!

Strawberries : Again same as the tomatoes, huge but bland and tasteless

Sausages : How hard can it be to make a decent a sausage?? OH for a bit of cumberland! Yummy!!

Black pudding : where can I buy it here???

Lamb : Again maybe a WV thing but I cant find Lamb ANYWHERE!! I miss a roast with a leg of lamb and mint sauce. Oh and a stuffed, boned and rolled breast of lamb is SORELY missed

Paxo : who'd have thought that summat as simple as stuffing would be so missed!

Dumplings : I CRAVE stew and dumplings! Atora suet where are you???

Pork scratchings : Ok not strictly 'food' - BUT with all the nibbles they have here you'd have thought that pork scratchings wouldn't be that hard to find! This pork 'rind' stuff they sell is just awful!

For me, after 18 months here, I'm still longing to taste some really good "bite your head off, chew and spit it out' style cheddar........ or in other words the kind that fights back!! Oh for a chunk of Pilgrims right now .....

And yes the bacon is just not the same over here. My american husband lived in UK for 3 years and even he admits to missing british bacon!

Just don't get me started on Bisto gravy granules ..... Marmite ..... twiglets...... well damn, and now I've got myself started!! SIGH ....

It seems the USCIS have struck an agreement with British airport authorities and this Summer there are going to be large notices posted at all gates in the UK with departures going to any US destination.

As follows:

Attention all Britons (and Scots) who are emigrating to the United States.

You will not be able to purchase the following items throughout the duration of your stay in the US:

Sausages (aka Bangers):
Bacon with meat in it.
Sugar-free bread.
Sugar-free anything, really.
Black pudding (ecky-thump).
Chocolate as you know it (but we do include extra sugar for free).
Mushy peas.
Tripe (not our choice - subject to international human-rights law)
Fish and chips (as such).
Baked beans (tho, our style with extra sugar is quite nice with curry powder).
Cream (the thick variety).
Bananas (just kidding).

Have a nice day

Theyve just opened a new Meijer here in Columbus (Britvic - its in Canal Winchester!), and under Ethnic Foods they have a British Section (for us ethnics!!)

I had my first Yorkie for a while at the weekend - it was grand!

yep I can see I am deffo going to have to expand my horizons further than Wal-mart for shopping - probably require a move to another state though as Wal-mart is 'it' as far as 'varied' shopping goes in WV ( well where I am anyways) Online shopping seems an expensive ( but temporary option) Hey maybe I could get Red Cross parcels sent here

Funny but when I first arrived here (with the exception of bread, bacon, sausages, and Oxo's) the whole 'different' food thing wasn't really an issue for me. I actually loved trying out all the different brands - probably the 'holiday' mentally. It's only recently I'm feeling the 'loss' - a touch of nostalgia more than anything else. I have even thought of opening a real 'english' chippy here *lol* , wonder how the West Virginians would take to a crisply battered bit of cod with a dollop of chips and a portion of mushy's! Or even better half and half with a carton of curry sauce! (yummy!) Hubby (USC) thought our 'chippy's' were great when he visited the UK - reckoned they would go down a treat stateside Oh for a bag of piping hot chips, (with requisite s&v) wrapped up in paper! I can almost smell them now! Beats the HELL outta mickey D's or BK! Rolling outta the pub at closing time - heading for the nearest chippy - now THAT I miss!
