I know most people would love to be doing Meth in the trailer parks of Dixie county or getting brainwashed at a Scientology convention in Tampa. For those who are a little more adventurous there is always the fun option of trying to find flood insurance for a house on the coast and all the while hiding from 90mph winds. Hmmm all sounds much better than Orlando can't wait to get the heck out of there.
Now that just rambling rubbish ....

space industry, tourism, banking and apparently selling concealed weapon permits is a good one.

If you don't want me on your case...then first off...don't make general statements that are of no help to anyone...and second....stop moaning about the place......
I wouldn't make a statement that isn't true. Orlando is a murder infested, drug infested, tourist infested, expensive hellhole.

If your thing is riding the teacups at Disney every weekend, then you'd obviously enjoy it.

If you want to give your family a good life, and have some $$ left to enjoy it, being a nurse in Florida with a family isn't it. There are thousands of MIDDLE CLASS and wealthy folk leaving the state because of the cost of living.

But then of course, krizzy knows it all. Living here a few weeks/months a year.

It's MORE expensive than it used to be but nothing compared with the Northeast or the west coast.

And apply at a few hospitals ..you will get offered a job ..there is a great shortage everywhere ...

Getting back to helping the OP....
Cities are mostly the same all over....crime....drugs...etc etc...that can overspill to out laying area's...a few of the Cities you are talking about are up and coming....lots of new builds...transient workers....so house breaking and car crime are not uncommon....if crime worries you then living near almost any large city in the world is going to be a problem...

Orlando has a bad rep because so many Brits live there...that can be a big con for a lot of people...but a big plus for others....I was not happy about living in a little Britain....but even being on many forums to do with visa's and moving to the USA...I still find most of my friends in that area are not English...
In the end only you know what your family needs...I liked my son growing up in small town USA...now I think he has out grown it...small towns have many of the same problems that cities have but in smaller doses...mostly drugs unwanted babies low wages...you can also add mind bending boredom to the list....
I would find people who live in the area's you are looking at...talk to them...visit the area's...this is a life changing thing so spend time and money on it now...if you don't you could make a big mistake and lose a lot in the future....good luck in your hunt....and if you need links to other forums that may help you just PM me....

Bakersfield is an armpit with no redeeming features. On top of that, like much of the Central Valley, it is pretty much ground zero for CA housing prices that have lost all relationship to incomes and thus is very susceptible to falling house prices over the next few years.
