The IS such a thing as good American bacon. It still has fat but it is thick cut with plenty of meat on it. Try a local smoke house or butcher shop. Bacon grease is a desirable thing anyway. It's what you fry the eggs and taters in.

A what?? The last one packed up and got sent off back to England after Yorktown. I have never seen a butchers here.

Whats a smokehouse?

You must really be in the sticks if there's no butcher shop! I don't know where you live so I can't help, but maybe try googling "meat processing" for your area?

A smokehouse is a place that sells cured and smoked meat. You were taking the so-called piss though, right?

Nope, I live in a typical suburban area with plaza's and malls allover. I've been here for donkey's but have never once seen a Butcher's shop like they exist in England. Now, the meat depts of grocery stores - yeah. The snooty ones might carry kidney and most carry bacon (not pre-packed) but I've never seen bacon without lots of fat on it in the meat departments. We have one of the biggest slaughterhouses in the country not too far from here and you'd think there might be more choice - but there isn't.

Actually, I have heard of a smokehouse - but never knew what it was or seen one. Sort of assumed it was something you found in the Yukon.

Wellshire Farms Dry Rubbed Center Cut is easy to find in most supermarkets and damned good thick cut bacon. It makes typical American bacon look pathetic and sickly.

Other than that. there's usually a variety of local brands that are worth trying. As I live in the city nicknamed "hog butcher to the world", there no shortage of good bacon available in my town...

I grew up in a town that had a Polish smokehouse in it (in Massachusetts). Goddamn, those Eastern Europeans know how to cure meat...

You'll tend to find smokehouses in areas where people raise their own animals, not your normal city thing.

There is no such thing as good bacon in Canada or USA. I have not bought any of the streaky stuff in years, so just have to go without.

I have been saying for years, like Elvira, what do they do with the lean back part. We were in UK in September and enjoyed decent bacon and egg breakfasts. Can't wait until we go again and get some more.

Plenty of places exist to buy 'English' style bacon. If you can't find one locally then you'll have to pay to have it shipped.
Whilst I was in a small town in Texas I used to have it shipped frozen from N.C.
Here in L.A. I can buy it locally.
I, and many others, are enjoying good bacon here in the US

I had cumberland sausages and back bacon for breakie, there is the plus side of my vacation in the UK, and to top it I had tail cod and chips last night from the local chippie lol
