I had a H1-B visa that expired on June 2004, it didn't matter when I left the country, when I re-entered, my I-94 was always valid until June 2004. What significance does April 5th 2008 have, is that when your Visa expires?
Probably. Mine expires on 9th April 2009, which is the expiry date of my H1-B plus 10 days.

I had my green card interview a few weeks before going to UK. I told the interviewer that I was planning to go away and asked if I could travel on my H1B. He said that he had not cancelled it and it would be fine.
It was not until later I realised thet my I94 was no longer in my passport, I assume that he took it.
When I checked in at LAX with Virgin they asked me where it was. I just say faked ignorance and said I dont know. They told me I couldnt leave without it as they passed me my boarding card.
I had no problems getting back in. Since I have an H1B I cant see that it should make so much difference unless I return with one already in my passport...
maybe I got lucky though.. or maybe I am screwed now in my GC which is still processing at the FBI
