SSN Observation
Not a question, just stunned by the efficiency of the USCIS & SSA!
I went to the SSA office on 27th July, 2 weeks after entering the USA. I was disappointed to be told they could not verify my immigration status and would have to apply for it manually which could take 4-6 weeks (as I have read about on here and hoped to avoid).
Imagine my surprise when my card shows up 'in the mail' yesterday!! Stunned by this, seems to be have been no longer than if I had been ok at the SSA office.
Pleased though!

Re: SSN Observation
They sorted out my wife and kids' names which were too long for automatic comparison with whatever system they were using. I forget how long it took but it wasn't long at all.

Re: SSN Observation
I flew in end of May 2010. I waited for 7 calendar days to go to the SSN office and the card arrived exatly 7 calendar days after that. So 14 days within me flying into the country I had my SSN card. FYI - I could have gone back the next day when i went to SSN to get my #.

Re: SSN Observation
I just caved in and spent an hour this afternoon in the local office, having become a citizen a few months ago.

My surprise was due to being told that I would have to wait 4-6 weeks, and then taking a little over a week.
Know what you mean about the soap....
