Default Social security ofc problem

I got married few days ago. I am k-1. I went to SSA today to apply for a number. The
lady won't accept my application unless i mail INS a copy of my Marriage cert so that
my name would be registered in their computer. Is that it? I bring along the memo
EM-00154 with me but she won't read
it. What to do? Pls help. I thought that as a k-1, you can get SS number immediately
with your I-94. (from k1.exit.com) Thank you. Mara

I got my SSN with just my passport with the K-1 visa and I-94. Maybe the difference is that you are changing your name? It might be worth going back and speaking to someone else.

Results vary. Try another SS office. If that fails and you cannot find any more
offices, ask to speak to a supervisor. Alvena

We went to our local SSA office in Colorado and we had no problems, they took a
copy of his I-94 and his 90-day temporary work permit and his K1 visa. Did you go
and get the work permit first, and show it? This seemed to make a difference for us
that we had gone the day before to the local INS to get the work permit. Just a
thought..... I think also it's easier to get the SS number *before* you marry...
did you marry already?

Keep me posted on your progress,

I went back the nxt day and another lady accomodated me. It was okay and saw her
scanning her manual after she looks at my passport and I-94. Geeezzz, people in one
office not coordinating with each other......

Thanks for your replies.

If our FBI and CIA cannot coordinate with each other, then it is no surprise that
other branches are equally disengaged!
