Thanks for that. Mike tried and was told they had a USA address for him still and he needed to call a 1800 number to sort it out. That just got us in a loop and then hung up on us. Do you remember the number you called?

Re: Social Security in the current climate

This is the number I called.

You can call us at 1-800-772-1213 between 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. local time, Monday through Friday. Wait times to speak to a representative are typically shorter ...

I applied on 5th March and quickly moved to 'step 2'.

I was contacted, by phone, on 26th April with a single, simple question. I was told my application was now complete and same day received an email letter with all the details.

Thank you! That's very encouraging! So yours took about 50 days. I'll relax for 20 days now :)

Well the 20 days (and the 50 days) are up, but no call or message as yet from the SSA. I checked online, and now there is a new message as follows:

'We are working as quickly as possible to process your application. If we require additional information, we will contact you.'

So I guess I'll just sit tight ...

My OH is the same. Applied January 31st to start in March online in UK. Still waiting. He did call the 800 number last month but still no movement - stuck at stage 2.

I applied online after 2 months trying to get a response from the FBU then after another 3 months from the accepted online application I called SSA in Baltimore. I started the application 4 months out, and eventually after the phone call to SSA had it fully approved after 5 months.

When my wife applied for her SS in 2021 she had to send in copies of her US passport and Naturalization certificate so I took the opportunity at that point to send mine in as well so when I applied no additional documentation was needed. I believe the FBU in London has access to birth records in the UK so we were never asked to provide proof of birth, they will have recorded our DOBs along with our passports etc at that point.

Can you apply for SSN online if you are not a US citizen? I am not a US citizen and will apply via London FBU later this year.

You need to have a SS account online before you can apply, and I don’t believe SS accounts are limited to US citizens. As well as applying through the FBU in London why not try establishing a SS account. You will need to have your Social Security Number (SSN) at hand.

A free and secure my Social Security account provides personalized tools for everyone, whether you receive benefits or not. You can use your account to request a replacement Social Security card, check the status of an application, estimate future benefits, or manage the benefits you already receive.

Many of our notices are now available online. With your account, you can choose to get available notices online instead of by mail and can choose to receive email or text alerts when you have a notice available. Getting available notices online means not needing to wait for it to arrive in the mail or the notice getting lost or misplaced.

Can confirm non US citizens can have an online SSA account. OH has one (was a green card holder), and went through verification via ID.me easily.

Whether or not he can apply online I don't yet know, and would love to find out.

I see this bill in the Senate about raising benefits,

But I don't see one regarding citizenship.

HR 1547 of the 119th Congress

To direct the Secretary of Homeland Security to notify the Commissioner of Social Security when there is a change to the citizenship status, status under the immigration laws, or work authorization status of an individual to whom a social security account number has been issued, and to require that an individual be a citizen or national of the United States to receive benefits under the Social Security Act.

Re: Social Security in the current climate

So I was reading up on the online application process, and what they will ask for, on the SSA site. This is the list they give. Do they reallh ask for earnings history and hours worked, etc? I though they had that? Not sure I can document that stuff, or do they ask for tax returns? And is this list complete?

Yes they do have all that, but they can ask some or all of those questions to verify your credentials to protect against fraud.

Re: Social Security in the current climate

They should have it but you can get it online anyway. I applied for me on a telephone appointment and it was very smooth and quick. We are now applying for my husband through London. Applying really is a very easy process, getting a response is proving a very long process for us at the moment..

Exactly.

They also require you to look at your earnings record on your latest SS statement and verify that it is accurate.

Gotcha, thanks.
